Be very cautious. What did they ask of you? If they asked you to provide your Apple ID and Password, DON'T FALL FOR IT.
It's very common for thieves to reach out to the victim and tell them they found their iPhone and to confirm, they ask for sign in credentials, which if given will remove Activation Lock and let them wipe the phone to be used by someone else.

Apple does not get involved with lost or stolen phones, so you know that the message was not from Apple, even though it might appear to be from "Apple Service", "Apple Support" or something similar.
99.9% of the time, messages like this are scams that are trying to trick you into revealing your personal info so the the thief can get into your phone to access the data and/or erase the phone and sell it as quickly as possible.
Be very careful. Better to ignore the message(s) and continue to frustrate the bad guys who will not be able to do anything with your phone.
You have to be realistic about things. The phone is not coming back.
Find My application and Apple do not send you notifications, email or text messages that your phone was found.
Any such message is a scam sent by the thief trying to get your Apple ID.
Do not click any links in such messages. Do not enter any information in the linked website if you are foolish enough to click on the link.
Delete any message sent to you and report it as junk, spam.
There is no Apple Notification that someone found your phone. You may get a scam notification that wants to get your Apple ID and Password. This is so the person that stole your phone can remove it from your account, then they can set it up as their own.
If they contacted you by ANY method OTHER than what was in your “Lost Mode” message …
… consider it part of a criminal enterprise.
