Sony Bravia TV remote stopped working with Apple TV

I used to be able to control Apple TV with my Sony Bravia TV remote. All of a sudden, two days ago, it stopped working. I have done everything. I can still turn Apple TV on and off but I could no longer navigate. When I try "Learn Remote", it doesn't recognize it. I'm not sure if there was a software update that created this issue.

I was having a similar issue with my Sony Bravia Television remote no longer controlling my Apple TV all of a sudden but I have found a temporary solution that’s worked for myself. The Sony remote can work via both Bluetooth or IR. To fix I followed these steps on the Tv itself. Settings - Remotes and Accessories- Bluetooth Settings - Toggle Bluetooth to Off. This will force the Sony TV remote to Use IR and allows it to be picked up by the Apple TV. You may have to relearn the remote in the Apple TVs settings but It worked straight away for me.

Only slight issue is that now when you try to control the TV itself e.g. change brightness settings it is also controlling the screen of the Apple TV as inputs at the same time. However not an issue most of the time.

Hopefully Apple Fix the issue so that I can use my Sony remote to control the TV the way it used to but this solution will suffice for now.

Hopefully this is helpful.

Same with our TV. Can’t get out Sony TV remote to work since 3/17. Can’t get the Apple TV Remote (hadn’t used it in years so had to charge it!) to work either. Did find that our iPhone 14 Pro Max and iPhone 15 pro max have a remote feature that does work but what happens when someone else wants to watch (kids) when we aren’t home with our phones? Hope Apple fixes soon!

I agree.. I noticed some odd behavior from the SONY TV a few days prior to the AppleTV update. I think Sony had an update that may have broken the Bravia sync when appletv updated. My TV became laggy in many respects prior to the AppleTV update, i.e., slow changes when given commands from the remote, slow changes between inputs which finally cause the screen to lock up and need to unplug from power to restart OS (Android). After a few restarts it seems to be settled, but not sure this is fully an AppleTV update issue. Getting to Sony support is a headache I'm not sure anyone can endure. I'll see if I can get an email through to Sony for any answers... Also, where are the Apple Support monitors on the discussion site? Anyone from Apple seeing these complaints?!

Have a Sony X90L TV, AppleTV 4K, Same issue as mentioned by this group, same dates when it stopped working (beginning-end of March 2024) was working great up to this point. If it’s happening to other brands of TVs, not just Sony, sounds like it’s an Apple issue? Please fix this Apple, and maybe a timeline? Not impressed with settling and using 2 remotes to operate devices that once worked together seamlessly.

March 24 Update: I had hoped that "Learn New Remote" might work, but it does not.

First I forgot the remote, then disconnected the battery every single time I had to press a button.

The biggest problem is that the Sony remote Model RMF-TX500U does not most of the buttons the set-up program was asking for, such as fast forward, rewind, stop, next track, etc.

After going through the entire set up, disconnecting the battery and reconnecting it for every single click, I gave the remote a new name, then selected it and clicked. It asked me to set it up all over again.

Total failure.

Sony TV Remote will not control Apple TV device anymore -- still a problem. The remote controls other devices and the remote will control the Apple TV app on the Sony TV itself, but just not the Apple TV box.

Even the Apple TV 4K (first gen) remote itself requires that I touch the Menu button before it starts working on the Apple TV device.

This is truly unacceptable. I now only use the Apple TV device for a "hub" for my Home Kit home automation items. This is not where Apple should be on this and this should not require folks going through any myriad of workaround to try to re-enable. It was all working so well for so long and now this.

Apple we are counting on you to fix this. Our smart TV remotes with HDMI control capability should be able to control the Apple TV devices we own. We had this capability and we want it back. Please investigate and repair.

Thanks,

Thank you all for this thread. Hadn't used the TV in a few weeks and wondered why the X80J remote wasn't working on ATV. Spent an hour messing around with it. Tried everything including swapping out batteries. Very odd but if I disconnect a battery (pull it out part way and re-install) the remote will provide one toggle of one function within ATV. Then nothing. Again, good thing I found this thread.

I was ready to purchase a new remote........

Thankfully, or should I say unfortunately, we’re not the only ones dealing with this issue. Just a few days ago my friend asked if my Sony Bravia and Apple TV 4K had sync issues. I said nah, everything is fine. Then a couple of days ago I unplugged both devices to clean my room and they’re no longer syncing—same as you, turns on and off but can’t navigate through the Apple TV UI. The same thing happened years ago so hopefully they’re on top of this and we can all get back to controlling everything with the Sony remote.
