CarPlay Message notifications are silenced

Siri used to read my messages when connected to CarPlay but a few months back it just stopped working.

I have been trying to get this function to work again but nothing works.

In CarPlay I have Announce Messages switched to on (I have tried toggling it on/off etc.) but underneath it there is a message that says ‘Message announcements are currently silenced.’ but there’s no explanation as to why or where or what is silencing them.

I do not have any sort of Focus settings activated and I do not have Do Not Disturb on.

What is doing this? It’s seriously frustrating.

I am having a very similar issue. ‘Announce messages’ can be on or off, phone is not on silent, driving focus is disabled, yet the only notification I get for a new message is a red dot on the messages icon. No pop up, no ‘ding’ noise, nothing.

Siri’s volume is fine, as when I press/hold to bring her up I can hear her fine. She reads messages fine when I go tap on the messages app then the message, but I am having to take my eyes off the road more to see what I’m doing than I used to.

how do I turn on the pop up notification and get a ‘ding’ noise, allowing me to see if I want to hear the message right away or not? I do not want Siri to just start reading it, but I need a notification that I’ve received a message like I used to.

Thank you but please read my post.

CarPlay works so there is nothing wrong wrong with the head-unit.

All of those settings are on but there is a message under Announce settings that says ‘Message announcements are currently silenced.’ with no explanation of why they are silenced.

As I said in my original posts I do not have Focus or DND activated.

I've finally worked out what was causing this problem.

The 'announce messages' volume level is set independently of music volume or hands-free phone volume.

There is however no separate volume slider for it in any control panels etc.

The only way to adjust the volume is during the time that Siri is reading a message & the slider is only visible when adjusting the volume while a message is being read. This means that if the volume is turned down you would not know this is the case.

Turns out my volume had somehow been set to zero so, while Siri was reading a message, I used my steering wheel volume controls to turn the volume up to a suitable level.

Problem. Solved.

Please get the car audio / infotainment system checked by a reputed car dealer.

If your iPhone isn't detected by CarPlay, make sure CarPlay isn't restricted. Go to Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions. If Content & Privacy Restrictions is turned on, tap Allowed Apps and make sure CarPlay is enabled. Go to Settings > General > CarPlay, tap your car and then tap Forget This Car.

If you need help with CarPlay - Apple Support (IN)

Announce Messages Settings:

  • Go to Settings > Siri & Search > Announce Notifications.
  • Turn on Announce Notifications and under CarPlay, choose Announce New Messages.

I did finally find the solution to this and it's as hinted at by @FelipeV

The volume control for the message announcements is independent of all other volume control.

The only way you can adjust the volume is to have Siri read a message and WHILE SHE IS READING IT you adjust the volume. As soon as you do this a volume slider that you can use will appear on the CarPlay screen.

Adjusting volume while Messages is open will not do it. It must be done WHILE a message is being read.
