How to Enhance Video and Audio in My Video using Final Cut Pro

Hi Guys.

I have this video which was recorded using a Phone Camera in 1080P 60FPS. It has a lot of background noise and so I want to remove the background noise and also somewhat make the colour of the video more colour ful. What do I need to do? Where do I need to go in Final Cut Pro to achieve these two things ? Where should I begin from ?

I just did a little bit of experiment on my own and I imported the video and added it to the timeline and then I went to Modify in FCP and chose Enhance Audio and when I also add Voce isolation and drag it to 100% the resulting file to export is a whopping 550 MB where as the original file is just 50MB why is FCP making this file with this enhancement such a huge file ? How do I ensure that even with the adjustments that Video File Size does not go so high ? While Export I am choosing Apple Devices 1080P option

The original File Information is this

Dimensions: MEO-S AAC, H.264

Colour profile: HD (1-1-1)

Audio channels: Stereo

Where do I start from ?

Also how can I see before and after in my project and compare the original file with the new modified one ?

Luis I got your point but did you also read what I had written earlier ? firstly I was trying to follow the example of the prague video where first you had changed the sky colour and then you added the duplicate clip to change everything else so I don't know now when the duplicate clip needs to be used? but anyways so like you said I have to apply any kind of mask to the original clip the clip on the top and when I do that only The Mask is visible all the other thing gets blacked out, meaning if I draw a mask on the face suddenly only the face is visible rest all gets blacked out. what do I do in that case ?why is it happening?

Hi @Luis, @Tom, @Fox_M

So I could apply and use a Shape mask which was easy thing to do then to use Draw Mask but the shape adjustment handles with the shape Mask are not perfect, meaning despite my best effort to adjust the handle it stretched our and now the Video because of the brightness I have added is kind of giving a little Halo effect on his face.

I would like to know and understand in the same way how can I use the Draw Mask without the problems I am Facing.

Now if you have a look in this Video even though I have added the Draw Mask to the top Clip look how the Mask still just keeps showing dots even after closing and nothing happens later. So what am I missing here ?

Draw Mask-2

The mask shows dots because, as Tom had mentioned already, you have it selected in the Inspector.

"Nothing happens".... well, actually something does happen! The bottom clip "shows through" in the areas masked out. Since it is identical with the top clip, it looks like nothing happens. But try applying an effect to the top clip, and you will see. For a very blatant example: go to the Color Board and drag the Saturation all the way down. See: the face is in greyscale and all the rest is not.

As we have been saying all along, using a Draw Mask is not the best way here, but it is working as designed.

Hi Luis,

So if I want to increase the exposure only on the face of the subject in my Video (Which is a kind of sitting interview kind of Video) Along with the other Colour Correction what would be the way to go ? Adding Mask becomes imperative right ? If I only want the changes to be applied on the face, and I also wanna track the movement of it.

I tried Draw Mask but it does not do a good job in tracking face movement. Plus it also gives kind of a Bright Halo kind of effect.

What a your suggestion then ?

@Luis

So couple of show stopper for me after I have started following your that Video when I apply the colour grading to the original clip and then I duplicate that clip and add a mask to the duplicate clip increase the exposure, apply a tracker and then click on the bottom clip and play, both the clip conflict with each other as in the mask plays differently with the tracker and below that even the original video plays and also two audio play creating an echo ?

I saw that Video by Mark Spencer but in his Video he uses a Text Message to display near the face, in my case what do you do if you want to just increase the brightness/exposure on the face ? How does it translate in my case ?

He also shows how to track a face and adjust its color. I think I even told you where in the video (maybe 12 min 49 sec or so, it’s even detailed in the video description if you click on “more” in the youtube page).

Whenever you want good instructions on using FCP or Motion, there is noone better than Mark Spencer and Steve Martin from rippletraining. They are not just very knowledgeable but also excellent teachers.

Hi Luis,

Yes this method to track face is very easy.

However there are some bottle necks that I faced.

  1. In My Project when I drag the colour wheel on the face of my subject ion the video I do not get the Link between Shape and tracker as he gets it in his video

This is what he sees- https://i.postimg.cc/zGMZXPPJ/temp-Image-Ko-TEs-D.avif

And This is what I see- https://i.postimg.cc/P51NmYsn/temp-Image-LKh-OUw.avif

Can you tell me why am I not seeing it ?

2. Even though the Colour Wheel on the Face does the Job Fairly well it is not perfect, if you see in this Screenshot below There are some areas of the Tracker which it does not cover fully and there are some areas which even if you do not want to include are included as you cannot change the shape of the tracker much

what to do in such a scenario?

I think that there may have been a change in the interface since the video was made. The video is for FCP 10.6, and we are now at 10.7.1.

This is not a feature that use a lot, but I think that the lock icon was replace by the little menu next to the word "Tracker":

"disactivating" the link button as seen in the video is now done by choosing "Offset from Tracker", as shown above.

The previous way might seem quicker, but the new one allows you to do more right from this menu, things that used to require using the Inspector before.

As to question number 2: you need to work a bit with the feathering, and perhaps at some points add a few keyframes if you need the mask to adjust over time, separately from the tracker. Mark Spencer deals with this a bit in the video too.

@Luis Sequeira1

On the Mark Spencer Video that you linked he used the Colour Wheel effect to track a face and make changes on that, in the example he shared there is a frame where the Face goes out of the Shape and tracker both in that case as a first option he operates the shape and tracker and adjusts it and in the second solution he adds a keyframe and adjust that. But I have a problem lets say in the video I am working on if the face does not change position much then adding a keyframe does not help, and still the shape and tracker still does not cover/fit the entire face. What could be done in such a scenario?

See the attached screenshot for understanding. In this case the shape cannot be changed to cover the corners of his forehead ? what to do in such a case ? The feathering is also not working as it does not include the corners of the forehead.
