It is true that MagSafe is a Qi charger, but MagSafe is specifically designed for iPhone which are MagSafe, which an iPhone 8 most definitely is NOT. If you want to use it, you can, but as you're seeing it is problematic as you're using a charger which was not designed for an iPhone 8 at all. The biggest issue is, MagSafe aligns with magnets built into phones which are MagSafe capable and align the charging coil with the coil in the back of the iPhone for a perfect fit. This is not something you can do on an iPhone 8.

Maybe you know someone who has an iPhone X or newer who could actually benefit from a MagSafe charger? It again is not the best charger for an iPhone 8 at all. Or hold onto it and use it in the future when you buy a newer, more modern iPhone, which is MagSafe.

Does iPhone 8 Plus work with MagSafe?

On its online shop (via 9to5Mac) Apple says: “The MagSafe Charger maintains compatibility with Qi charging, so it can be used to wirelessly charge your iPhone 8 or later, as well as AirPods models with a wireless charging case, as you would with any Qi-certified charger
