Apple USB C digital AV multiport adapter HDMI connection keeps blacking out

On my 2020 M1 Pro running Sonoma 14.2.1, my adapter keeps connecting and disconnecting from the external monitor. This not only happens for multiple cables and monitors on the HDMI port, but the USB input also regularly disconnects. This has rendered my $69 dongle worthless. This has in turn rendered the MacBook useless for presentations if there is no available usb c connection, which is unacceptable.

I could use some help.
