Airport security damaged my iPad Mini 6th Generation
I don't know how this happened, but going through airport security at LAX, my iPad Mini stopped working properly. When I was pushing it to turn on, the screen had a strange frosted look over the upper left of the screen and the down volume button wasn't working. I tried restarting it several times during my flight, but it looked the same.
I left it alone a few days and when I went to use it, the screen looked ok again, but the down volume button still wasn't working. At strange times, the volume just starts going down on its own. You can see the volume bar appear over and over again as if I'm pushing the volume button down. I've seen some suggestions online for when this happens to other people. Some say to change the orientation of the screen and pressing the volume up button should reset it (this worked only a couple times). Some say to just keep pressing the up volumn button until it stops (this works sometimes). But often I just let it behave like this until it goes away on its own.
Most of the time, on the left side of the screen, it looks like there are about 5 black beams coming from the left side of the screen. It's subtle and doesn't affect anything really, but it almost looks as though there are 5 equidistant small flashlights coming from the left, but instead of a white light, it's black. It's not a simple blackout. Just looks like black soft beams of light. There are brief times where the screen looks normal again, but I can't seem to trace how it fixes itself. It inevitably comes back, though.
The third major difference since going through airport security is it often goes into DFU mode meaning I can't turn it on via the power button or any other means. When I connect it to the computer, it tells me I have to reset the device and it wipes and reinstalls everything which takes hours and I have to re-log into everything when it finally is ready again. This happens every time I let the battery go down to zero. There's no hope of just plugging it in and recharging it to use it again. So of course, I'm always dreading if I have it unplugged for transport.
Since I have to reset it by DFU so often, one time I just reinstalled from scratch with only a few core apps instead of using a backup. Now it takes about an hour instead of about 8.
I'm frustrated because I'm broke and can't afford to get a new one and of course its out of warranty. I've also been hoping to wait for the next release of the mini which has been rumored since last year.
I guess my general question is, has anything happened to anyone where the only thing you did was let it go through airport security? I wish I was able to keep an eye on it which I'll try and do from now on. Like maybe they somehow got it wet? Maybe their screening system did something? I've been traveling for years and never had devices malfunction, but this situation has me flummoxed and confused.
If anyone has suggestions for any of the individual issues (volume button, black beams, or DFU locks), that'd be great, too.
Thanks!
