CarPlay arbitrarily mutes microphone during call.

While using Apple CarPlay in a 2024 Subaru Outback, my microphone is consistently muted without warning a few minutes into calls. I can still hear the other party, but they cannot hear me. The only fix is to hangup, redial, and experience the same result.

New software upgrade is available that addresses this issue. I can confirm this.

Had it done last week. Owner of a 2024 WRX.

Check the link below - make an appointment at your local dealership to get the upgrade for free.

Applicable cars:

  • 23-25MY Outback/Legacy Models (including Wilderness models)
  • 23-24MY Ascent Models
  • 24MY Impreza
  • 24MY Crosstrek (including Wilderness models)
  • 24MY WRX
  • 25MY Forester

New software version numbers:

  • FM1WHM073-980 (High model software)
  • FM1WMM073-980 (Mid model software)
  • FM1WBM073-980 (Base model software)

ISSUE RESOLVED!

  • Wireless connection drops while using wireless CarPlay due to external signal interference from surrounding facilities etc. (only applicable to HIGH and MID trim)
  • During CarPlay handsfree call receiving party is not able to hear the caller as the microphone data is muted

I am having this same issue with my 23 Subaru Ascent. The dealership has tried two different updates and neither has worked. This is soooooo frustrating and indeed, it is dangerous. The only “fix” I’ve found is to take the call to the phone on speaker. Subaru tells me this is an Apple CarPlay issue and is occurring across multiple makes of cars. Apple please get this under control! It’s unacceptable. I’m an Apple lover, but this is making me love you less. I have a daily commute and often conduct business on my phone. CarPlay is so convenient, but sadly it has been “updated” to the point of dysfunction.

2024 Subaru Ascent Touring - same issue! Have not tried the “fix” of switching to speaker then back to Carplay yet, BUT this is dangerous! I’m using Carplay when I’m driving!!! I can’t/shouldn’t be trying to do this when I’m driving! The other weird thing is I’ve had the car since mid-March, all was fine until about 6 weeks ago, what’s changed? Could it be related to the automatic over-the-air software update from Subaru? Frustrated!

I am on my second Subaru and have eight iPhones and Apple Watches on my account. This audio dropout is not only unacceptable, it dangerous and possibly illegal. In most states it is illegal to use a handheld phone in any way while driving. This issue forces us to find our phone and tap through at least three icons to recover the outgoing audio. While doing so I have just driven the length of a football field with phone in hand and eyes on the phone. My 2024 Outback Touring XT actually yells at me because the driver monitoring camera sees me not looking at the road. My Subaru cares, but is there any response from Apple?
