MacBook Pro 13 2017 fans not coming on

I have a MacBook Pro 13 2017 model and it seems the fans are not coming on automatically. Recently had the battery replaced, but it was doing this before. I have reset the SMC and installed a fan control app and can make the fans work through that. Does anyone have an idea as to why they would not be coming on by themselves?

I would run Apple Diagnostics to see if any of the Fan errors come up. You should remove the fan control app first using any provided uninstaller to make sure it does not interfere with the test.

Use Apple Diagnostics to test your Mac - Apple Support

The error codes related to the fan are:

  • PPF001
  • PPF003
  • PPF004

The Touch Bar version has 2 fans and the version without the Touch Bar just has 1 on the right side and they only come on when using a processor intensive app.

During the diagnostic, you will hear the Mac at one point spin up its fans quite high. It also reads back the fan RPM sensors to be certain all are working as designed. It also checks all the internal temperature sensors, and will report on any that appear to be stuck at too high or too low.

In normal operation, your Mac reads the internal temperature sensors more than 10 times a second, and adjusts fan speed based on measured temperatures. Fans speeds are adjusted by turning them DOWN from their fail-safe speed of Maximum.
