My MacBook has been experiencing an issue for a while now where the green light of the camera turns on, but the camera screen remains blank. Occasionally, it starts working, but then goes back to displaying a blank screen intermittently.

Sounds like a hardware issue with the laptop. It is a bit odd for the camera to work occasionally although the camera cable may have a break in its flex cable if you have a USB-C model laptop. More than likely you will need to have the Display Assembly replaced by Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider which will be expensive. You may want to consider using a USB camera instead.
