I just updated to macOS Big Sur and can't access Microsoft word, excel or powerpoint

When I try to update from the App Store it says Office 365 needs OS12 or above, but now I can't access any spreadsheets or documents

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 11.7

Microsoft currently only supports Microsoft 365 (subscription), or Office 2021 for Mac (single purchase) for new installation on macOS Monterey (12.*), Ventura (13.*), or Sonoma (14.*). All other Microsoft suites have been retired and their license servers disabled — so no new MS Office installs on Big Sur.

Now, on Big Sur, you have a few choices for opening your MS Office documents:

  • The free LibreOffice 24.2.3 or later suite which is an MS Office clone
  • Softmaker's Office 2024 for Mac (free trial, paid software). also an MS Office clone
  • Apple's free Pages, Numbers, and Keynote from the Mac App Store require macOS Ventura or later
