Why do I have to enter my password to use Touch ID on my MacBook Air?

Why do I have to enter my password to use Touch ID on my MacBook Air? "Every time you start up, restart, or log out, you'll need to type in your password to access your user account and enable Touch ID." That is the standard explanation. That would make sense, but this is happening randomly, when the device has been sleep for a length of time, especially overnight (not any of the above scenarios). And it's happening more and more frequently. Any help is appreciated.

Open system preferences and select the Lock screen tab to see the lock screen settings. The fourth item down lets you set the requirement for entering a password if the screen saver starts or display goes to sleep. I suspect you have this set for immediate or a short delay.
