New IPad Pro M4 13 inch battery draining fast

I got myself the new IPad Pro M4 13-inch (512Gb) this week, and it feels like the battery is draining really quickly. Went down 5% in just 15 minutes using standard apps like Outlook and Pages. Overnight it also lost 5%, with background activity being switched off as well as “Find My” being switched off. Currently running iOS 17.5.

Anyone else been experiencing the same? There are so many great reviews talking about the battery life of this new iPad, but the experience is proving otherwise?

iPad Pro, iPadOS 17

I have my new M4 iPad sitting right next to the 2018 pro I am replacing and the M4 is losing battery faster. This is a week after delivery, when it is just sitting with a 5 apps open but no active use. (The 2018 has 16 apps open...) Not what I bought this for.

My battery on my 13 inch M4 is draining faster than advertised. I drain about 2 to 3% overnight (with or without the Low Power Mode) - which is acceptable I guess. But I am only getting maybe 8 hours of screen time per charge (100% to 5%) when using light work, Y-Tube videos, and movie watching. I also keep my screen down to about 25%. Other than this battery issue, I am most satisfied with the iPad Pro. If I completely power down, the battery does stop draining - which I find myself doing when traveling. I have an iPad Mini 6 with even worse battery drain. My AirPods Pro also drain when not in use more than they should too. So I have concluded that Apple products have battery drain issues and have learned to accept this shortfall. In summary, my new M4 iPad Pro drains faster than advertised - but that seems to be par for the course with Apple. The only exception has been my iPhone 14 Pro which seems to drain it’s battery as advertised. I could hope for an Apple software fix for this - but I have been waiting too many years for these fixes with no resolution.

I posted earlier in this thread about my 13" M4 draining fast; well now I also have an 11" Air and that seems even worse. Drains from fully charged to >30% overnight. I bought this for my wife, and all she does is some Instagram and reads a book before she goes to sleep.

@apple any thoughts on this? Do I need to return both units?

Perhaps understand the Apple Support Community is a user-to-user technical forum. Contributors here are all end-users, just like you. Other than the site Moderators, Apple neither monitor nor participate here.

As such, if you hope to reach Apple through these forums, you will be disappointed.

If you have purchased a new device directly from Apple, if you are unhappy in any way, you generally have 14-days within which to unconditionally return the device for exchange or refund.

Upon expiry of 14-days, the opportunity to obtain an unconditional refund will be lost. However, hardware faults will be addressed under the terms of Apple's limited warranty.

I want to buy the M4 iPad pro 11 inch but I'm thinking twice now because I seen so many of you having ridiculous battery drain issues. Does this only happened when you choose to restore the backup files from your old iPad or does it also happened when you just set it up as brand new device without restoring backup files? If anyone knows please reply as it would help me with my decision, thanks a lot :)

You’re absolutely not alone. I just bought the iPad Pro M4 11in so I wouldn’t have to squint at my iPhone 15 Pro Max screen anymore (I used to do everything on the phone until I got the iPad). The charge is supposed to last 10 hours but I’d say it’s more like three …. I can go all day on the phone without issue.

I’m tipping this is a software issue which will be fixed when the new OS comes out. It really needs to be ‘cause there’s little point in owning a portable device that needs to be plugged in all the time.

While I am glad to know I am not the only one with this problem, it is very disheartening to see considering how much people have payed for these devices. I had my 13” Pro plugged in since last night yet when I unplugged it this morning and immediately went to use it the thing was at only 97% and I have lost 2% just while typing this out. Very disappointed and am hoping there is a fix for the drainage issue soon.

Mine the 11in feels like a higher drain but it's only few days old even if I transferred use case from my old ipad this ones gotta learn my usage and the battery I'm sure will adapt plus I'm confident in the next update to address and Improve battery life. Cause if this ipads using my previous ipads battery use memory it's going to be bad as it's was the 2018 pro 6yrs old. From my experience with apple don't panic it is inconvenient I get it but they will address it. The hardware won’t fail leave the upsets to iPadOS
