Apple News not connected to Internet but all else is

On my iPad, I keep getting warnings that Apple News isn’t connected to the internet but all other apps and services work as expected. The error is short-lived but often no news stories are found or the error message reappears. I tried resetting the network settings, reinstalling the News app and restarting the iPad. So far no luck.

A bit of an update, I have since spoken at length with an Apple support agent about this. After going through a number of tests it does appear, in my case at least, to be an issue with the news app.

While the issue is still ongoing the fact is that if Apple aren’t told there’s a problem, they can’t fix it; so my advice to anyone having this issue is to raise it with Apple support.

You will have to go through a bit of tedium and basic steps, but keep calm and patient with the agent and give them the chance to run the diagnostics they need to so that they can then present the evidence to the development team.

The more of us that report this, the more evidence can be supplied to the developers, the more evidence that the developers get then the easier it will be for them to understand and fix the issue.

No issue on Sonoma here with no VPN installed.

For you.

That's not a meaningful nor helpful data point for everyone actually experiencing the issue.

You can't prove something doesn't exist. That's epistemologically impossible.

What the data point shows is that it is possible for Apple News to work under Sonoma. Therefore, Sonoma is most likely NOT the problem.

If you are using a VPN, remove the profile and try again. If it works, you know the problem is with the VPN. Let us know the results.

What it doesn’t explain is the root of the issue for people who use iOS without a VPN.

Before you can explain a problem, you have to figure out what the problem really is, not just the symptoms of the problem.

The people we need to hear from are the ones who read this thread who:

Dictating who should be allowed to reply here never ends well.

1. Use an iPhone or iPad.
2. Have iOS 17.5.1
3. Have the issue without being connected via a VPN
4. Have the issue using Cellular and WiFi

The first thing you should be doing is updating your operating system. The current version is iOS 17.6.1.

I fear you have misunderstood my post and the intention behind it.

I was not trying to explain the problem, Apple developers are paid to do that, I’m not.

I also wasn’t dictating anything to to anyone, just trying to encourage as many people to contact Apple support directly.

My iPhone and iPad update automatically, 17.5.1 was the latest iOS available last night, it may well update tonight when I am asleep, with any luck that will sort the issue.

But whatever, I don’t mind trying to help people, but I have no interest in needless forum tail wagging.

If it assists the debate re iOS updates etc ..When I spoke to the Apple techies I was already on the latest update 17.6.1 on my iPhone and they were aware so anyone updating to this is not likely to see any improvement . I would suggest a further update to the app or a new iOS fix will be needed . They said they were aware of the problem and I can only suggest others pester their help dept as it is really annoying at present

I've also been experiencing this issue with Apple News on all my devices (iMac, iPad, and iPhone) for the past several months; random lack of pictures, shortened article feeds, and a small message at the bottom of the screen stating that I'm not connected to the Internet. As with others, I knew that not to be true, as all other apps and pages responded and were active on the Internet.

What I did discover after some experimentation was that the culprit was being up on my VPN connection!! In every instance where the Apple News was broken, I simply de-coupled from the VPN and went back to my stock local ISP connection, the problem resolved. In EVERY instance, on EVERY device!!! Evidently Apple's developers have an accidental (or not) glitch in it's update to the News App that refuses to play nice with us trying to be secure in our daily operations.

I'm going to take a few hours of my time to contact Apple Support about this directly to ensure they get this in their bug list, but just thought y'all might want to check your settings to see if this is the cause of the problem on your systems. ArDitDit!

thanks I’m in downtown San Francisco area

You are missing the most important detail that has been discussed extensively in this post. Are you using a VPN?

After further reading answers here...IT IS MY VPN, when it's on the News feed doesn't work...as soon as I turn my VPN off it stops working. Thanks Apple, I can't protect my device from threats so you can play games with my ability to use News...

If you have a VPN App or profiles installed, or a security/AV/firewall App such as Norton, these may be interfering with the iPad's active network connection. The resolution is usually simple; if installed, you may need to temporarily disable or completely remove the Security App and/or VPN - and perform a forced restart of your iPad.

After restarting your iPad, the VPN and/or security App can be reinstated if needed.
