Apple News not connected to Internet but all else is

On my iPad, I keep getting warnings that Apple News isn’t connected to the internet but all other apps and services work as expected. The error is short-lived but often no news stories are found or the error message reappears. I tried resetting the network settings, reinstalling the News app and restarting the iPad. So far no luck.

Has Apple solve this problem with intermittent "No internet connection" message in the news app?

I noticed pictures would take a long time or just not show up as far back as November 2023, and just caulked it down to slow or busy internet or cellular, but never had the No internet connection message until May 2024.

Like everyone else, I have tried cellular only, internet only, and both. Everything is fine, even data heavy apps that use a lot of real time video.

Since Apple wants to charge a subscription to allow downloadable news stories (a message I have only recently notices), I can only assume that it is an Apple News App issue, and they have not worked out all the bugs yet.

I wonder if anyone with a paid Apple News subscription has the same "no internet connection" message?

I am getting very frustrated with Apple News not connecting to internet, when all other relevant apps on iPad have no problem connecting to internet. Also have issues with iCloud backup. Like so many other Apple users all these issues only started after 17.5.1, update. Have tried all suggestions to resolve these issues, nothing works. I feel like throwing this iPad away and getting a Samsung.

Apple must have seen all the communications relating to the problems to this update, yet they remain silent. Why? Are any others annoyed by their silence or as little people are we just expected to put up with an inferior product. I just want to enjoy a product I have paid to enjoy.

I have had this issue for at least a month. I’m guessing a little on when it started, but it’s probably closer to two months. It occurs on my iPhone and iPad. It has happened at home, on cellular, and at work (WiFi) - as well as other less frequented locations where I connect to WiFi. So it’s not device or network specific. Unless it’s an issue with my iCloud account, which based on this thread seems unlikely, it is an issue on Apple’s side with the app or communication layer. While it’s intermittent, it’s frequent enough that another month of this will be enough to make me downgrade from Apple Premier to a lower subscription level. I will make time to report to Apple (dreading making that time commitment) and if I get any new info I’ll share it here. Thanks to those that have posted.

The news issue mentioned in this thread is NOT resolved by changing to using google’s DNS service (as this posting suggests).

It apparently was resolved for the person you're replying to. Just because you have the same symptom doesn't mean you have the same problem. Different people in this thread may find their problem resolved by different things.

I fear you have misunderstood my post and the intention behind it.

I was not trying to explain the problem, Apple developers are paid to do that, I’m not.

I also wasn’t dictating anything to to anyone, just trying to encourage as many people to contact Apple support directly.

My iPhone and iPad update automatically, 17.5.1 was the latest iOS available last night, it may well update tonight when I am asleep, with any luck that will sort the issue.

But whatever, I don’t mind trying to help people, but I have no interest in needless forum tail wagging.

No issue on Sonoma here with no VPN installed.

For you.
That's not a meaningful nor helpful data point for everyone actually experiencing the issue.
You can't prove something doesn't exist. That's epistemologically impossible.

There has not been an issue reported when using Sonoma on MacOS 14.6.1 when there has not been a VPN installed preventing access. If that is not the case for you, then please provide the details of your OS version and follow up by making sure you do not have any of the known categories of software that do conflict with the OS:

  • Cleaners
  • Optimizers
  • AntiVirus

After that, if still no luck then provided the free EtreCheck report using the Additional Text option when posting. The report contains no personal information.
