Apple News not connected to Internet but all else is

On my iPad, I keep getting warnings that Apple News isn’t connected to the internet but all other apps and services work as expected. The error is short-lived but often no news stories are found or the error message reappears. I tried resetting the network settings, reinstalling the News app and restarting the iPad. So far no luck.

A bit of an update, I have since spoken at length with an Apple support agent about this. After going through a number of tests it does appear, in my case at least, to be an issue with the news app.

While the issue is still ongoing the fact is that if Apple aren’t told there’s a problem, they can’t fix it; so my advice to anyone having this issue is to raise it with Apple support.

You will have to go through a bit of tedium and basic steps, but keep calm and patient with the agent and give them the chance to run the diagnostics they need to so that they can then present the evidence to the development team.

The more of us that report this, the more evidence can be supplied to the developers, the more evidence that the developers get then the easier it will be for them to understand and fix the issue.

Apple News app thinks it cannot connect to the Internet even when there is a valid wifi connection with an ip address for my phone All other apps work and an okla speed test is giving me 4.7 mbps in both directions . This is a problem for a lot of people it seems . Please fix it Apple

If you have a VPN App or profiles installed, or a security/AV/firewall App such as Norton, these may be interfering with the iPad's active network connection. The resolution is usually simple; if installed, you may only need to temporarily disable or remove the Security App and/or VPN.

If this resolves your issue, the VPN and/or security App can be reinstated after the connectivity problem has been resolved.

If some Apps are working as expected, while others are not - or other devices can connect to your WiFi network - you may find that a restart of your WiFi Router, followed by a restart of your iPad will clear the problem….

To restart your router, disconnect power from the router for at least 30 seconds - then reconnect power to restart. After your router reboots (which may take several minutes), force restart your iPad:

Force restart iPad (models with Face ID or with Touch ID in the top button)

If your iPad doesn’t have the Home button, do the following:

  1. Press and quickly release the volume button nearest to the top button.
  2. Press and quickly release the volume button farthest from the top button.
  3. Press and hold the top button.
  4. When the Apple logo appears, release the top button.

Force restart iPad (models with the Home button)

Press and hold the top button and the Home button at the same time. When the Apple logo appears, release both buttons.

If you continue to have difficulties, check to see if your iPad is using the WiFi Private Address feature. This feature is intended to provide additional privacy and security when using “public” (untrusted) WiFi networks.

Settings > WiFi > [Your WiFi Network / SSID] - tap the “i” icon - Private Address

The Private Address feature is largely unnecessary for your home WiFi network; if enabled, Private Addressing can cause issues if specific MAC addresses are expected by your WiFi Router. You may need to disable this feature - and can be enabled or disabled for each individual network.

I understand submitting trouble tickets is key, but that’s a clear cop-out on Apple’s part - they monitor these discussion forums (or their AI bots should) and can tell there is widespread problem since a recent release and need to get onto fixing it.

users subscribed to News+ also experience this ‘no Internet’ issue when clearly every other app is working fine.

it’s driving me crazy and I can only see the top headlines reliably, so I now just go directly to the 4 or 5 preferred channels’ websites to read the stories.

I have the same issue "no internet connection" but it seems to happen randomly on my iMac Pro. However if I disconnect my VPN it will always then display correctly. But it does work with VPN on at other times. If this problem persists I too will cancel my subscription. I don't need to pay for this irritation , I already get enough that I don't pay for.

That was tried when I was on the phone with Apple support for well over an hour, the outcome of all diagnostic tests was that the problem must be with the App or Servers, so it was escalated to the development team.

Obviously the more reports and evidence the development team get, the better they will understand the issue and how widespread it is.

In the mean time I have cancelled the subscription and rarely use the news app.

The news issue mentioned in this thread is NOT resolved by changing to using google’s DNS service (as this posting suggests).

It apparently was resolved for the person you're replying to. Just because you have the same symptom doesn't mean you have the same problem. Different people in this thread may find their problem resolved by different things.

I was having the same problem on my Mac and contacted Apple support, and the issue was my VPN, which I usually have on. I turned it off and it solved the problem. I never had that issue before even with the VPN on, but I recently updated to the latest OS, and that's what's causing the problem. The Apple support guy told me that it seems the two "are not getting along". He wasn't sure though. But I think that's what it is.

After further reading answers here...IT IS MY VPN, when it's on the News feed doesn't work...as soon as I turn my VPN off it stops working. Thanks Apple, I can't protect my device from threats so you can play games with my ability to use News...

I wouldn't be so convinced that the VPN is protecting you from threats. Many have been caught selling your personal information including name, address, and passwords. Here are just some recent reports of that happening:
