Apple News not connected to Internet but all else is

On my iPad, I keep getting warnings that Apple News isn’t connected to the internet but all other apps and services work as expected. The error is short-lived but often no news stories are found or the error message reappears. I tried resetting the network settings, reinstalling the News app and restarting the iPad. So far no luck.

A bit of an update, I have since spoken at length with an Apple support agent about this. After going through a number of tests it does appear, in my case at least, to be an issue with the news app.

While the issue is still ongoing the fact is that if Apple aren’t told there’s a problem, they can’t fix it; so my advice to anyone having this issue is to raise it with Apple support.

You will have to go through a bit of tedium and basic steps, but keep calm and patient with the agent and give them the chance to run the diagnostics they need to so that they can then present the evidence to the development team.

The more of us that report this, the more evidence can be supplied to the developers, the more evidence that the developers get then the easier it will be for them to understand and fix the issue.

If some Apps are working as expected, while others are not - or other devices can connect to your WiFi network - you may find that a restart of your WiFi Router, followed by a restart of your iPad will clear the problem….

To restart your router, disconnect power from the router for at least 30 seconds - then reconnect power to restart. After your router reboots (which may take several minutes), force restart your iPad:

Force restart iPad (models with Face ID or with Touch ID in the top button)

If your iPad doesn’t have the Home button, do the following:

  1. Press and quickly release the volume button nearest to the top button.
  2. Press and quickly release the volume button farthest from the top button.
  3. Press and hold the top button.
  4. When the Apple logo appears, release the top button.

Force restart iPad (models with the Home button)

Press and hold the top button and the Home button at the same time. When the Apple logo appears, release both buttons.

THIS IS DEFINITELY AN APP ISSUE...why won't Apple address it? This has been a random issue with all devices (iPads and MacBook) for me for at least a year...comes and goes randomly and is NOT internet related (all other apps are using the internet with no problem)...has there been any update on this issue, as of 09SEP2024 my News feed will not work...and it's NOT the internet even though the News app is sending an error message that it is.

Obviously the more reports and evidence the development team get, the better they will understand the issue and how widespread it is.

Absolutely. Everyone having this problem should contact support and/or use the feedback page:

As I'm sure you know but other peple may not, Apple doesn't read here in this user-to-user forum for feedback, suggestions or bug reports.

No issue on Sonoma here with no VPN installed.

For you.
That's not a meaningful nor helpful data point for everyone actually experiencing the issue.
You can't prove something doesn't exist. That's epistemologically impossible.

There has not been an issue reported when using Sonoma on MacOS 14.6.1 when there has not been a VPN installed preventing access. If that is not the case for you, then please provide the details of your OS version and follow up by making sure you do not have any of the known categories of software that do conflict with the OS:

  • Cleaners
  • Optimizers
  • AntiVirus

After that, if still no luck then provided the free EtreCheck report using the Additional Text option when posting. The report contains no personal information.

This thread is mainly people having issues with iOS based devices like iPads and iPhones.

Sonoma is a MacOS version so if you have no issue then all that tells us is that it works for some people who use News on a Mac without a VPN.

What it doesn’t explain is the root of the issue for people who use iOS without a VPN.

From my point of view it looks as though there is a bug in the iOS 17.5.1 update that intermittently, but frequently, prevents the News App from connecting to the Apple News servers for some people (myself included).

The people we need to hear from are the ones who read this thread who:

  1. Use an iPhone or iPad.
  2. Have iOS 17.5.1
  3. Have the issue without being connected via a VPN
  4. Have the issue using Cellular and WiFi

If all of those statements apply, then the root cause of the issue is likely to be the same, and please contact Apple support so that they can log the issue and the developers can see the scale of the problem and hopefully rectify it with an iOS update.
