Shut down when on idle for 20 seconds - Recovery Disk Requested

Instead of going to "sleep", my macbook now shuts down unexpectedly EVERY TIME. I literally have to run to the computer to move the mouse to prevent it from shutting down. I will get the error message when I boot back up, that the computer closed unexpectedly and then I log back in and things try to reopen.

On a couple of occasions, it's actually gone to a different page and said it would like me to use a recovery ckey or the startup disk???? I can't recall the exact words, but it's something like that. I don't have either, so I click the back button, and it brings me to the login screen.

Is this a hardware issue?

Welcome!

In this text-based setting where we can neither see nor touch your computer, It is very hard do say if this is a hardware issue without knowing which Macbook Pro you have nor what macOS version it is running. They have been in continuous production since 2006 in dozens of variants with different potential hardware issues and troubleshooting procedures.

While the computer is running, please do "About this Mac..." from your Apple menu to quickly find your SUB-MODEL and macOS VERSION. This is a sample from a Macbook Pro running macOS 11 Big Sur:

The important sub-model always includes a year. If it also includes modifiers like Early, Mid, or Late, please include that.

⚠️ FOR SECURITY REASONS, pleass DO NOT include the serial number.

Reagrdless of model you can see if an SMC reset helps. How to do that also depend on your model. Carefully read the information on this page before trying an SMC reset:
