Messages frozen and crashes on iOS 17.5.1

Ever since updating to iOS 17.5.1 a few days ago both my and my daughters Messages app rarely works. Usually usually if you bring the app up, it’s just a blank black screen and all you can do is kill it or wait a little while and it’ll crash on its own. On the rare occasion you can actually use the app. It’ll only work for a couple minutes and then crash.

We have both reset all settings on our phones and restarted them many times. Nothing fixes it. Has anybody had this problem with iOS 17.5.1 and found a fix?

Called Apple. They tried to do a few things and even share screen but the thing they send that would pop up on the screen didn’t show on my end. I explained about messages crashing, white screen, black screen, not being able to access messages in settings, etc. First had me do this:

press volume up quickly, then press volume down then hold power button until phone shuts off. Didn’t work. Then she had me go to General -> scroll down to transfer or reset iPhone -> reset -> reset network settings. Did that, she called me back, didn’t work. Then she had me so the same thing but instead of reset network settings, it was reset all settings. It worked. Did it Tuesday and it’s now Sunday. I had previously tried adding more storage and clearing off stuff on messages to no avail. Hope this helps.

Having the same issue (on my iPhone 14 pro). iMessage, Facetime, and the phone app all open to a blank screen and then crash. I can't even use other apps sometimes. I have had to force restart my iPhone about 15 times since yesterday because if I don't, my phone freezes, and gets stuck, and does not work. After force restarting it, it maybe works for an hour or two then stops again. My settings app works only until I click on something, and then it stops working. Apple told me to put my phone into recovery mode and select update on a computer, but I am not risking losing anything. I couldn't even call 911 if I had to. This has got to be fixed.

It worked for me for two weeks once I disabled forwarding messages to my iPad. Then it just died when I was using CarPlay. I disabled car play, unpaired Apple Watch and nothing works.

Finally I installed release candidate for iOS 17.6 and the problem is gone and the phone appears to be running faster. Will report again if there are any issues.

My solution was to delete the eSIM, which was a secondary number I had from a different telco. Problem solved. Of course I want to have that secondary number on the one iPhone. So I am trying again, got another eSIM for the secondary number from the same secondary telco, activated it, now waiting for telco to port my previous number over. When I did this the first time, it was fine for the first few days. I also went and added other eSIMs purely for data (in two separate countries), and that was fine.

Perhaps it has to do with organizing my iMessages across the two numbers. Both are associated with my appleID.

This has been happening to my iphone 14 pro max and my wife’s iphone 15 pro max.

to fix mine, i had to remove my physical sim and use it on an old iphone 6 just so i could send and receive sms messages. This fixed my 14’s messages app. so i have 2 phones for now while this problem persists. Yesterday i tried the “turn off stolen device protection “ and returned my physical sim. So far so good.

however, my wife has an esim so she can’t just switch out the sim temporarily. She also turned off stolen device protection which fixed her Messages problem yesterday. She woke up this morning however and the Messages problem is back.

frustrating.

Think of it like your IP address. You don't want it to drop you with every network hiccup so they built in a 4 hour delay to the IDS registration system. It's a well-known vulnerability within the infrastructure that registrations can be faulty, but it's really difficult for Apple to a) detect and b) reset individual devices. Like I said, it's a shared layer between messages AND FaceTime AND HomeKit.

Over and out

Nothing has changed, I fail to understand that basis of IDS registration if all that changed was the update that apple released. 4 hours logged out...why 4 hours? We live in a cloud backed world were things update in seconds or mins. This doesnt make sense to me or even sounds relevant...its equivalent to turning it off and on again. Thank you, next.
