Hi Besya,

I have experienced this issue as well, I tried some troubleshooting listed below:

  1. update your iOS device and airpods
  2. Check your Headphone Accommodations (Settings-> Accessibility-> scroll down for AirPods-> Audio accessibility settings-> Headphone Accommodations. Here make sure all the settings are correct with your hearing preference.
  3. Check which AirPods (left or right) is using microphone by clicking on little (i) icon next to AirPods in settings and set it to automatic or manually check if only one particular AirPod’s microphone is causing problem by switching between them.
  4. Clean the AirPods with apple cleaning guide from their website.
  5. Try recording a Voice recording in voice memos application with AirPods ON to see if the issue occurs on calls only or it’s not recording normally either.
  6. Try resetting network settings as it can occur due to connectivity issue as well.
  7. Reset your AirPods and pair again.
  8. Contact apple support for repair options.

Thanks
