Can't install eSIM on US bought iPhone 12 Pro Max

I now live in Spain and am a customer of Vodafone Spain. We have been unable to install an eSIM on the phone and do not see anything in Settings>Cellular>Vodafone about an eSIM option. I have been at the Vodafone shop twice to try to install and both times it failed and the Vodafone tech was at a loss as to why. An Apple authorized dealer needed 3-5 days to do a diagnostic and I can't be without a phone for that long. They also tried to install an eSIM with a QR code from Vodafone without success.


Has anyone experienced this? Apple checked to confirm that it is not a phone produced for China/HK/Macau where eSIMS are blocked. TIA

If you have not installed the eSim, there would be no "Vodafone" section in Settings ➜ Cellular.


There should be a simple "Add eSim" option though.

What happens when you tap on that?

If you see a Vodafone section, then either the eSim or a physical sim is present and active.


Just to verify, what is the model number for the iPhone in Settings ➜ General ➜ About ➜ Model. If you see a number starting with the letter A, tap it once to change it to the other model number, and post it here.

That's a north American model, so should support an eSim.


I attach a screen shot of the Cellular section with the Vodafone SIM in the phone. Should I take it out before trying to install an eSIM?

You should not need to.


The eSim option should be there whether there's a physical sim card inserted or not.


Are there any restrictions in place? A corporate Exchange account that may be restricting the use of an eSim somehow?
