iTunes Library.itl cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes

Hi,

I've built my iTunes library over years and have been using it with various iPods (still disappointed that the iPod Touch was discontinued :() - currently I've got version 12.12.4.1. Today I read that there's Apple Music for Android and the app said something about being able to sync your Apple Music library to it, so I installed the Window Apple Music app through the Microsoft store. Looks like this was a huge mistake!

The app did something and all of my music started showing up in it - everything except my audiobooks. I connected my phone to my PC and started the Android app on it but the Windows app didn't seem to recognize it, so, since the audiobooks were also missing, I uninstalled the Windows app again.

But now, when I try to start iTunes, I get the error:

iTunes Library.itl cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes

It looks like, whatever Apple Music did, it somehow also messed up the .itl file! It's still a pretty big file and the "iTunes Music Library.xml" file is also still there (and huge - more than 10mb) but iTunes is refusing to read it.

I tried the "start iTunes with Shift pressed" trick but got the same error when I tried to open the file.

How do I fix this?

Windows, Windows 6
