extend applecare on iPhone SE 3rd gen before it expires
some answers say can when less than 30 days remain, other say within 30 days after expiration. Also the ability to extend or not doesn't' show after following directions.

Apple has a clear statement on how to extend Apple Care+ coverage in the support page Extend your AppleCare+ coverage - Apple Support, which also says for customers in eligible countries "Purchase the new coverage within 30 days after your original coverage ends."
Instructions are also given on how to determine the date of expiry of your current coverage.
The option to extend a coverage will appear only after the initial coverage has expired. I have discovered this myself when waiting to extend some of my Apple products, which I duly did in the 30 day period after the Apple Care+ coverage expired.
