Do note, that the "Locations" section in your screenshot is closed. So you won't see any devices there, not even your Mac's hard drive. Hover your mouse over the locations title so the ">" appears and click on it to expand the section.
It should then show the iPhone there when connected.

Problem solved. It was the wrong cable. I purchased a USB C to USB adapter and that did the trick.

That is not a dumb question. I am NOT using the same cable. The only cable that came with the phone does not connect to my desktop USB port. I am using a charge cable that came with a a Moudou wireless lavalier micophone. Could that be the problem?
It could easily be the cause of the problem.
If it's only connecting the 5V and ground pins, then as far as your computer and iPhone are concerned, they are not connected to each other.

Found one of John Galt's posting re Xcode in macOS 12 Monterey
"Your iPhone needs to update software to … - Apple Community
Interesting. That thread refers to installing Xcode, and then running it at least once (which apparently finishes installing some things).
In the High Sierra threads that I saw, people were going into the Xcode installation and copying out or running some particular mobile-device-related piece of it. Possibly equivalent as far as that one component goes.

I plug the phone into my desktop. The phone begins to charge so I know it's connected. But there is no iphone listed in the sidebar of my finder. (see attachement)
Dumb question: Are you using the same cable that you were using when things worked?
If you were using a "charging only" cable that connected the USB 5V and ground pins, but not the data pins, I would expect exactly this outcome.
When the iPhone is connected by Cable - does it Ask you to Trust this device ?
Sync over Wi-Fi instead of USB
When your device is connected to your Mac via USB, you can set up your Mac so that in the future it syncs over Wi-Fi instead.
You can now unplug your device from your Mac. When your Mac and device are on the same Wi-Fi network, your device appears in the Finder sidebar, and it syncs automatically over Wi-Fi whenever it's plugged in to power.

Got it
There have been some more Senior Contributor suggesting installing Xcode to achieve the update
Not familiar with the usage of this Heavy Weight application thusly not making that a suggestion
@ John Galt was the person making that suggestion if that helps others track it down
I've seen people suggest that for getting iTunes to recognize iPhones running iOS 17, under High Sierra. From all indications, iTunes 12.8.3 running under High Sierra should be sufficient to manage such iPhones - and it should update itself if needed. But judging by posts on these forums, people are having mixed results in practice.
Some went so far as to download Xcode, extract a component from that, and use that to update iTunes' support! Something that should not be necessary, but that apparently worked for them.
Are you sure that this suggestion pertained to Macs running Monterey, and that it was not High Sierra and iTunes specific?
Thank you for doing in on OP's question
As @ Phil0124 mentioned, " The more the merrie "
As I normally have worked primarily macOS 11 Big Sur and above
Am fairly certain, Xcode was used in one or more of those specific versions of macOS
Until I can actually find the suggestion or @John Galt should pass by
Still looking for it
Perhaps OP is best to follow the other suggestion from @ Tesserax and contact Apple Support Directly
Where exactly are you looking for the iPhone?
It should appear in Finder if its unlocked and has trusted the computer.
Did you review the Apple Support article that PRP_53 provided you a link to? If so, and it didn't help, you will need to contact Apple Support directly for further assistance with this matter. To do so, simply select the "Support" link on the lower left-hand side of this forum's web page.

Good work there 😎
From a Non Apple Source and related to the iPhone using the 24 Hour clock versus the more conventional AM / PM format
Personally, I do not sync or connect my iPhone 15 Pro to any of the 3 Machines presently running Sonoma 14.5
Just use iCloud to backup and sync across pics, vids, passwords etc
Works like a charm
This article from Apple and effect iPhones running iOS 17 when connecting to an Apple Computer
If your Mac says that a software update is required to connect to iPhone or iPad
No need to step aside. The more the merrier.
Also, at this point, only thing I can add, is to question how the iPhone is being connected to the Mac.
If all seems to be correct and its not showing up then I'm baffled.
If there's a message stating an update is required that was not mentioned, then that would offer a course of action.
But outside of checking cables and ports and trying different connections I have no more insight to offer.
Got it

I would do that except, as I stated above, my device doesn't show up in the sidebar of the Finder window to click on. I'm in a catch 22.
My iphone does not even exist as far as OS Monterey 12.7.5 is concerned. I will have to upload everything to icloud and download from there I guess. But what about backups of my iphone?
