Do note, that the "Locations" section in your screenshot is closed. So you won't see any devices there, not even your Mac's hard drive. Hover your mouse over the locations title so the ">" appears and click on it to expand the section.
It should then show the iPhone there when connected.
That is not a dumb question. I am NOT using the same cable. The only cable that came with the phone does not connect to my desktop USB port. I am using a charge cable that came with a a Moudou wireless lavalier micophone. Could that be the problem?

I would do that except, as I stated above, my device doesn't show up in the sidebar of the Finder window to click on. I'm in a catch 22.
My iphone does not even exist as far as OS Monterey 12.7.5 is concerned. I will have to upload everything to icloud and download from there I guess. But what about backups of my iphone?
How to back up your iPhone or iPad with iCloud
I want to download videos and photos from my iphone to the desktop computer. The iphone no longer appears in the finder. I've restarted both devices. They are both trusted. Still nothing.
All yours 😎

What SoC is saying that there are USB cables that do only charging & others that also do Data.:)
I plug the phone into my desktop. The phone begins to charge so I know it's connected. But there is no iphone listed in the sidebar of my finder. (see attachement) There is no message stating an update is required either.
