Lawrence Finch’s suggestion (turn Mail Privacy Setting ‘Protect Mail Activity’ off leads the way to resolution, but needs clarification.

For me, simply turning ‘Protect Mail Activity’ off was insufficient. Turning it off revealed two further switches: ‘Hide IP Address’ and ‘Block all remote content’. Turning ‘Hide IP Address’ off did the trick.

Still, the abrupt change in Mail behavior indicates something is awry in Apple land, and ‘Hide IP Address’ is a useful feature. Have to remember to re-enable it when the problem is resolved.

No, nothing is awry. It was a new feature added in iOS 17.5.

The last action as stated in the chain did the trick for me as well.

Do a forced restart "Press and quickly release the volume up button. Press and quickly release the volume down button. Press and hold the side button until you see the Apple logo." That is all that I did and when the iPhone powered up, the issue has been resolved.

Thank you dana_pac_ for having documented the issue and resolution well.

Shoe junkie response helped me fix the same problem that started with me on my iPhone7/25. I’m wondering if this also is an iPhone glitch with the update that happened a few weeks ago. I just turned limit IP under Wi-Fi and my images reappeared automatically. Are we supposed to put limit access on all the time though? All this happening because of all the hacking? Does someone have an answer of what we should do for the long-term

This is an Apple issue with iCloud Private Relay. And it’s effecting mostly iCloud+ subscribers. You can do the work around but don’t forget to reverse that work around once it’s repaired by Apple.

“Launched in 2021 specifically for iCloud+ subscribers, iCloud Private Relay helps protect Apple users from online trackers by encrypting traffic going through customer devices. The DNS service sends requests using two separate internet relays to restrict web trackers and internet service providers to profile users by combining their IP addresses, location and browsing activity. It uses the Oblivious DNS-over-HTTPS protocol that Apple designed in collaboration with Cloudflare in 2020.”

This Happened to me too on the 23rd of July… not just images in email (for iPhone, iPad and Mac… even Android) but also images in and videos some apps. However the problem goes away when I am on another network. We have 2 service providers at home and when I switch to the other everything works fine. Also when I use cellular data.

I wonder if all our internet service providers changed their network settings at the same time.

If you read the comments here, you'll see that many people just started having this issue in the last couple of days. The issue is that the images included in our emails (logos, etc.) that normally load automatically are being prevented from loading and we have to click on "Load content" for each email, which we never had to do before. Your last question is exactly what we want to know!

I'm including a screenshot of the message that appears at the top of my emails on my iPhone and my iPad, but not on my iMac. So it may be be an issue limited to iOS.

Not sure about specifics for lynnemichl1, but my wife and I are having the same issue. We are not trying to load anything at all, but to open an email and not having the message displayed and the extra needed step to click on the load remote content. The emails are from many various senders to various receiving email accounts my wife and I have on our iPhones. Have yet to check on my MacBook Pro for the issue. Everything worked fine yesterday and today things have changed. It appears to be related to any content in an email that is not text. Not sure if this might be specific enough to be helpful or not.
