Lawrence Finch’s suggestion (turn Mail Privacy Setting ‘Protect Mail Activity’ off leads the way to resolution, but needs clarification.
For me, simply turning ‘Protect Mail Activity’ off was insufficient. Turning it off revealed two further switches: ‘Hide IP Address’ and ‘Block all remote content’. Turning ‘Hide IP Address’ off did the trick.
Still, the abrupt change in Mail behavior indicates something is awry in Apple land, and ‘Hide IP Address’ is a useful feature. Have to remember to re-enable it when the problem is resolved.
No, nothing is awry. It was a new feature added in iOS 17.5.
I’m getting the exact same message at the top of my screen when opening any email with graphics, logos, photos etc. it says:
Your network settings prevent content from loading privately. And then there’s a link in blue which says Load content.
When you click the link, the graphics etc load immediately. Annoying!
Same with me. I noticed this morning that email content is not loading automatically. I didn’t change any settings overnight. It can’t be a coincidence that we all have the same issue on the same day.
Have you read the above posts from several people having the same issue? We are opening our emails, which are not showing any graphics or logos as they usually would. This just started happening July25th.

When I open my email, there’s no pictures or actual advertisements. There are blank boxes with little blue boxes in the middle with a ? In it. Then I have a link just on top of the box that says “display images to show real time content.” My iPhone seems to be doing ok. Thanks for your help
OK, that is a feature that protects your privacy. Sites that send email can put a tag into images that notify the sender who you are and when you view the image. The actual picture is not sent in the email; instead, it is a link to the image. The image can also change from time to time, so, depending on when you open the email you can see different images. This is a popular way for businesses to spy on you. That’s why the images don’t load until you tap “display images…"
You can turn this protection off by going to Settings/Mail/Privacy Protection.
This started happening for me as well, today, July 26th. Seems to be only graphics and some (?!) photos don’t load until I hit the ‘Load Content’ link. Using iPhone 17.5.1.
Does not happen on iPad 15.8.2 nor on Mac 12.7.5.
This is quite interesting as it happened to so many people yesterday and today. What has changed over night. This has occurred with two separate email accounts on individual email accounts. Pleas expand on how to remedy this.
I updated to iOS 17.5.1 in May but this issue began yesterday (7/25). If this new feature has been on my iPhone and iPad for two months, why did it just start causing problems yesterday? And are we supposed to keep "Hide IP Address" off forever? As Dan said, keeping it on sounds like a good idea.
@shoejunkie09, this fix corrected the issue for me however isn’t it better to limit the IP address tracking, for our own privacy? I agree that it’s weird so many of us started having this issue overnight.
Just started having this problem in the last day or two myself. Came out of nowhere, and no changes to iOS or settings on my end.
First, could someone clarify: is going to SETTINGS > MAIL > PRIVACY PROTECTION then setting PROTECT MAIL ACTIVTY and HIDE IP ADDRESS to OFF supposed to clear the warning/restriction from e-mails already showing it OR does it only prevent it from showing up on NEW e-mails?
Toggling these features to off is not doing anything on content I've already received.
More to the point, MAIL was functioning properly just the other day with HIDE IP ADDRESS set to ON. Why the problem now?
For what it's worth, I've also just recently started having a problem across all devices getting kicked out of my Apple ID account multiple times per day. Anyone else seeing this?
This is happening to A LOT of people, including me. For me it just started today 7/26/24 around 6:30pm. The issue is…when opening email, NONE of the images are displayed. See screenshot another user posted.
No, I don’t think it’s part of iOS 17.5 since I’m still using an iPhone 7 Plus which is stuck with iOS 15 and it’s doing this on my old phone as well. Maybe they sent out something to all iPhones regardless of version.
Thanks for the advice. I took others’ advice re switching off the limit IP tracking - that’s fixed the email download issue (which also just started today). Will switch it back once Apple’s resolved the issue.
I understand I can turn off he security feature but why did the loads from the email messages just start to be blocked all of a sudden without any other changes that I know of (other than perhaps some sort of Apple updates without changing the version)? And I assume when we click to load the content that basically turns off the IP address hiding.
That solution worked but we have to give up an important privacy protection. A massive amount of user data was just unlocked. Marketing departments will rejoice, they’ve been looking for these IP addresses matched with open and click rates.
I wonder if this is anything to do with that global outage a few days ago, I’m experiencing the same thing, it’s not a problem for me to click “load content” but my dear old Mum who is 85 will panic, and think she has done something wrong.
