Lawrence Finch’s suggestion (turn Mail Privacy Setting ‘Protect Mail Activity’ off leads the way to resolution, but needs clarification.

For me, simply turning ‘Protect Mail Activity’ off was insufficient. Turning it off revealed two further switches: ‘Hide IP Address’ and ‘Block all remote content’. Turning ‘Hide IP Address’ off did the trick.

Still, the abrupt change in Mail behavior indicates something is awry in Apple land, and ‘Hide IP Address’ is a useful feature. Have to remember to re-enable it when the problem is resolved.

No, nothing is awry. It was a new feature added in iOS 17.5.

Someone said "they fixed it". I have not changed any of my settings that are set to hide the IP address and protect email. However, it seems the unable to load message has disappeared on my iPhone 15 Pro running 17.5.1 (as it had been for many days before I started getting the error).

However, the unable to load private content message still shows up on an iPad (iPadOS 16.7.8) and old original iPhone SE (iOS 15.8.2). As far as I know, all three devices have the same settings.

I don't want to "fix it" by lessening my privacy and security. I would like Apple to reinstate the privacy to all my devices that were working before 7/25/24. I am assuming when I click Load Content on the broken mail that the device is not using the protections.

Exact issue here ["Your network preferences prevent content from loading privately" next to a clickable "Load content directly" button]. For me this only happens on a MacBook Pro running Monterey (12.7). Emails on my iPhone work fine. The suggestion that this is an iPhone update doesn't make sense or answer the many Mac and iPhone users concerns.

Turning off a security setting doesn't seem wise, especially in light of an apparent glitch. Not that it matters where we are in the world, but I'm chiming in from the Pacific Northwest.

Thanks to everyone for posting. It is good to know it is not our individual device that's failing. Or some setting we altered in our sleep.
