New MacBook air charger gets VERY WARM when plugged into wall or surge protector

My MacBook air charger seems hot when plugged into wall outlet or surge protector with battery back-up. All are new. I am not worried about my mac (should I be?), but what about dangers from the cord and charger? Thank you.

The Apple power adapter/charging cord, can get quite warm when the laptop's battery is charging from a nearly depleted state, but neither should get so hot that you cannot comfortably touch them. This would be normal for these conditions.

It can also depend on the current ambient temperature conditions.

However, although rare, it may be possible that the adapter/cable is defective. If you are concerned, I suggest that you contact Apple Support directly for further advice on what the next steps should be ... should they become necessary. You're very welcome.

If it helps, Apple power adapters are very well built. Typically much better than many 3rd-party alternatives.

FWIW. Personally, I have never had an issue with any Apple power adapter with my Macs ... and I have been using Macs since 2006.

This older (2012) article may offer some insight. Although it covers iPhone/iPad adapters, it does hold true for those designed to be used for Apple laptops:
