How to rename a photo in Photos then save it as a file in Finder.

After editing a photo in Photos I want to save a copy of it as a file in Finder with a new name. I do not want the copy under Photo Library in Finder, I want it saved to a Finder Folder I created. Please advise how to copy a photo in Photos, rename it, and save it to a Folder I created in Finder.

MacBook Air, macOS 14.6

To save an edited photo from Photos for Mac to a folder in the Finder under a new name,

  • select the edited photo in Photos, enter ⌘I to open the info, then type a new title into the title field of the Info.
  • Then use the command "File > Export > Export 1 photo". In this dialogue that will open you can specify the file format (JPEG, TIFF, PNG) and the size and quality.
  • Set the selectors "Filname" to "Title" to use the title as the filename.
  • Set the folder format to "None". When the save dialog opens, click "New folder" and specify a location and name for the folder.

For edited and commented pictures, use "File>Export>Export nn Photos." The export dialog looks like this:

I usually use the Title, from the Title field in the Info Window. I use the app Photos Workbench ($30) to batch generate titles. But, as you see, you can create a file name with a sequential suffix, like GrandCanyon 001, or you can use the Album name with a sequential suffix.

When exporting Unmodified Originals, you get the same options for the name of the exported file.

Control-click, also called right-click, opens a pop-up menu.

command-i ( ⌘- i ) opens the info window, like this:

For this picture the file name is "DSC_2718.JPG," and the Title is "2024 08 03 - 095 - Heard in the Morning." The Caption is "2024 08 03 - Heard in the Morning" without the index number, 095.

I used PhotosWorkbench to enter the Title, but it can by typed into the Title field directly.

Copy means copy the selection to the Clipboard

Save means overwrite the file in Finder with the present version

Save as... means record the file in Finder, and pick the location

Export is similar to Save as... , but for specific file types

Share sends a copy to other apps, like Airdrop, Messages, Mail, etc

They get a bit muddled sometimes, but that's more or less right, I think.
