I am unable to disable the trackpad on my MacBook and use mouse instead

I've seen this question answered a while back - though folks shared the instructions link - and I have done that - I have a check mark in "Ignore built-in trackpad when mouse or wireless trackpad is present” - I have restarted, started, tried various mice - the trackpad just won't disable. I've got the mouse working - but so is the trackpad.

I am not techy - and while the instructions are clear - my Macbook Pro is not responding to the action.

Any insight would be valued.

Though it's a 2016 Macbook Pro - it works perfectly for my needs - outside of the trackpad that's always been an issue for typing (my hands always touch it and it mucks with the mouse / text). Though, now that I want to be using it more frequently for writing - I just can't.

Again, any ideas are appreciated.
