Need to update old software, 10.11.6

I have the OS X 10.11.6 on my MacBook Pro. A lot of websites aren’t opening or running properly because the software needs to be updated. When I click on the update bar, it says no updates are available. I found an update on the Apple website, but it says that the update requires Mac OS X version 10.7

How do I get that?

thank you, I’m using on my old computer and really appreciate any help!

You can't update beyond 10.11.6, and if you MBP is too old, then 10.11.6 is the end of life operating system for it.

Your problem comes down to two problems - expired certificates and an obsolete browser. You can manually update the ISRG X1 Root certificate, e.g., see these instructions from Let's Encrypt:

https://docs.certifytheweb.com/docs/kb/kb-202109-letsencrypt/#macos-ios-etc

You should, of course, not necessarily trust some rando on the Internet talking about updating things at the core of your keychain, so I encourage you to research it yourself, first, e.g.:

https://letsencrypt.org/docs/lencr.org/

Certificates are part one, browser is part two. Safari from 10.11 is unusable on the modern web. There are only a few decent supported legacy browsers IMO:

There is also Chromium Legacy Browser (https://github.com/blueboxd/chromium-legacy)...I'm a bit indifferent towards it. On the one hand, the developer is keeping it up to date as Chromium is updated. On the other hand, it's a fork and the code is not signed, so in theory malicious code could be inserted in it and there'd be no way to know.

If your Mac is too old to run anything later than High Sierra, and you are unable to load certain websites because they are insisting on a newer version of Safari than the one incorporated in High Sierra, then you may be able to get by with a newer browser.

Firefox ESR is one such option: https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/new/

That link ought to determine your Mac's eligibility for their Extended Service Release and offer it for download. I happen to know it will work on High Sierra and even earlier versions of OS X, even for this site (Apple Support Communities). Try it.

There are no further updates for macOS 10.11.6. Depending on the age of your MacBook Pro, you may be done, or there are other major upgrades available to install. OS X 10.7 came years before 10.11, so that is off the table.

In Apple () menu > About This Mac, look for what is in parenthesis on the product description line. That will be a year modifier (early, mid, late) and the year. Now you can check to see if your model and year of MacBook Pro is supported on a later operating system.

Beyond Mojave 10.14.6, there is no 32-bit application or device driver support so you need to verify that applications and printer/scanner support remain at the appropriate vendor site. You can see what software is 32-bit by using the free Go64 app.

Once you have determined how far you can upgrade above, then you can download that version of macOS from the Mac App Store using the Safari browser at How to download and install macOS - Apple Support

Don't upgrade your Mac with performing a Time Machine back to an external drive and then don't let the new operating system back up to that Time Machine drive. Use another drive.

Your macbook pro is at the end of line for OS update, if you go to the update bar and it states no update available.

You'll need to get upgrade to a newer device to get the newest OS so you can view websites.
