Macbook pro plus ipad pro sidecar not working

I have been trying to connect my ipad pro to my MacBook pro using the sidcar feature. When I go to settings and try to set it up it says "this device is on time out" or something along those lines. I am confused because when I first bought my ipad I got it to working just fine. Not sure what I am doing wrong.
