Canon R5 Mark II RAW files are not supported by Photos or other apps in iOS 17+

The RAW files from the new EOS R5 Mark II are not supported in the photos app. Apple should include support for these new RAW format in the next iOS update. Photos, and many third party photography software depend on apple's native support for these RAW formats. I can't open anything I'm shooting at the moment.

To be blunt, adding raw support does not seem to be a priority these days for Apple. So, some cameras are never supported, so partially supported and some fully so.

Options: Convert the raws to DNG with Adobe's free converter.

or

Use a third party app to manage these (and if you wish) all you photos. Apps like Adobe's Lightroom and Lightroom Classic, CaptureOne, DxO Photo Lab, Mylio and others have their own raw support and tend to be faster and more complete in the support they offer, but then they ought to be as you pay for them. Also consider the software that the maker of your camera recommends, which is most likely free and there are also open source options too.

This forum is a User-to-User forum so no one here knows what plans Apple have - if any - for adding support for a particular model of camera. As I said above:

You may have to wait a bit longer. The Canon EOS R5 Mark II has just been announced. Usually Apple needs at least six month up to a year to develop the RAW support for a new camera, if it will be supported at all. Not all new cameras are getting RAW support from Apple.

I recommend to send a feature request to Apple and ask for the RAW support to be added. Apple - Photos - Feedback

The Mark 2 has a completely new sensor, so the RAW format is going to be quite different from what Canon has supplied in the past. Apple will need a lot of information from Canon to decode the new RAW format. I have supplied feedback to Apple requesting the support; if others also use the Feedback app or other channels to request this enhancement, it will move this up in priority for Apple.

I am not sure if there is a way to ask Canon to supply the necessary information to Apple, but if there is one that would probably help too.

I’m using Lightroom on my iPad Pro. It seems to work just fine. I then export the JPEG into my Apple photos. I personally like how Apple catalogs photos in the Apple ecosystem. My normal workflow has been to edit and photomator but Lightroom seems to be working just fine. I just wished it was more integrated into the Apple ecosystem. I’m hoping that iPadOS 18 adds raw support. I’ll be upgrading today when it drops, so we’ll see you then.

Canon R5 Mark II Raw Support: Gentlemen Coders, https://www.gentlemencoders.com/, have software for the Mac, Nitro, that is compatible with the R5 Mark II raw files. It's a stand alone and plug in app for Apple Photos. It's works really well. Then there's also DNG Converter, free from Adobe, though Nik, the founder of Gentlemen Coders, tells me there is some data loss using DNG Converter. Nik was an Apple engineer for 18 years and part of the Apple Photos app team.

Is that a compressed raw file format? If, it may be awhile or maybe even never. Adobe doesn’t support all the different compressed raw file formats either.

Here is the latest list of cameras and formats supported by Apple. Note, Apple states Canon raw only. I suspect they will never support cRaw based on past history.

Hee115, I only use the Apple photo program to edit my raw files. For now, I am only shooting in JPEG with the canon R5 mk ll because Apple has not updated their Photos program to allow me to view raw files. I am totally frustrated and wish they would update their system soon. I sent in a request to Apple tech support and was informed the engineers are working on it but they cannot give an exact time as to when it will be updated for the R5 mk ll. I also have the r5 mk l and those Raw files can be viewed in the Apple photos program with no problem.

The Canon R5 MKII uses either .CR2 or CR3 raw files which are not recognised, therefore, I suggest the you get in touch with Canon: https://www.usa.canon.com/support/canon-product-advisories/Firmware-Notice-EOS-R5-Mark-II-Firmware-Version-1-0-1?utm_source=canon_community&utm_medium=announcements_box&_gl=1*1ochtgy*_ga*MTYwNzQ3MDYzLjE3Mjg4MDgxMzA.*_ga_RS2XCXV1Y7*MTcyODgwODEyOS4xLjAuMTcyODgwODEyOS42MC4wLjA.

They may suggest that you convert the .CR2 or .CR3 files to .TIFF files. They will have the necessary software that you could download to enable this action.

Something for you to consider:

Is TIFF the same as RAW?

No. While TIFF is a lossless format, it only stores the processed image. That's why it has less post-processing flexibility than a RAW file.

I'm a Nikon user, so all my raw files have the extension .NEF (Nikon Electronic File). When I click on an NEF file, it opens in Nikon Image Space software that I keep in the Dock. Canon my have software of their own.

No, I am referring to seeing thumbnails in Photos (and probably iMovie, but I have not checked that). As far as I know, the support for raw formats is limited to those two applications. I have not seen a more general raw support, even for the previous raw formats. When I have tried to send raw images in Messages, for example, they show as CR3 files, not images. Same thing for Finder.

It would be nice, so I will look into submitting an enhancement request. If enough people do so, we might get a more generalized raw support throughout the OS.
