Managing photo albums on iMac

Every so often, the computer randomly "floor sorts" my 500+ albums, that I normally keep ordered by title (using year and a sequential number, then month + day to title (eg. 2017 C1, Jan 5 - ....).

According to help pages, and I am sure that I have used it before, there was a button under "view" > "Sort" > "Order albums by name".

Now, my computer only gives me a ready ticked, un highlit "keep sorted by oldest capture date" ....

Manually sorting back to the previous logical order takes HOURS and MUCH frustration. Then it will at some stage randomly sort again ... Arrrrrggghhh!

The same thing is happening on my iPhones and iPads ... and the new album orders vary between devices !!!!

PLEASE HELP ME, before I start to smash the devices in sheer fury and frustration. THANK YOU.

The sort option to sort the list of albums by the name is only available, while you are viewing a folder with albums or the Albums part of the sidebar.

You may want to try this:

  • Open Photos
  • In the sidebar right-click or crtl-click "Albums" and click "Sort", then "By Name".

if you are starting from the View menu and are seeing "By Date", you may have opened an album. Inside an album you can only sort the photos in the album, not the list of albums in a folder. Or you have upgraded to a newer system version than shown below your question.

But sorting the list of albums by ctrl-clicking the enclosing folder in the sidebar should be working in the current system version as well.

So, try to start from the sidebar.
