I am unable to do a password reset on my Apple Account

Anybody else going through a ridiculous process to reset your AppleID password and being repeatedly diverted and lied to?

My password suddenly stopped working last week, when I haven't changed it in years. When I tried to reset it using the AppleID site, it presented me with a bunch of options that I did not have access to, so I had to choose "Account Recovery". A week later, I've been on three support calls and have gone through the reset process three times. The first and second time, I was told that I would receive a call or text message. Both times given were in GMT and would have been past midnight Eastern Time. Regardless, I never received a call or text message.

Then the third time I talked to support I was told that I would be able to reset my password in 3 hours, which I verified on the AppleID site. I was also told that I would receive a callback at that time to make sure the process worked. I never received a call, and when I logged into the AppleID site it now says it will take another 2 days before I can reset my password. It has been over a week.

Apple support is of absolutely no help, they just tell you over and over again that they have no control over the process, which is baloney. There isn't a single software service I've ever used that has made a simple and necessary account management function completely impossible. Steve Jobs must be spinning in his grave right now.

Has anyone else been through this and successfully changed their password?

When you do get the Password reset, make sure to add a Trusted Phone number. By using the Trusted Phone number, there is no wait time and you will be able to immediately reset your password. Without the Trusted Device or Trusted Phone number, then that leaves the Account Recovery process.

The Account Recovery process does take time and has been reported to be up to 3 weeks. Many people on this site have had their password changed using this method. The normal process is after you submit the Recovery request you will get a call/email within 3 days. That does not mean you will be able to reset it in 3 days. The call/email will tell you how much longer you are going to have to wait. The amount of time you have to wait will vary. As reported in the link below, further delays may be caused by:

  • If you submitted your account recovery request with iforgot.apple.com through your device's browser, you should avoid using that device during this period. Using that device might cancel account recovery.
  • To avoid delays, turn off other devices that are signed in with your Apple ID until account recovery is complete.

To avoid any of this wait time, set up the Trusted Phone number. You also have the option to use an Account Recovery Contact. Planning ahead is the key to successfully change your password without having to go through that trouble.
