My iPhone 13 Pro Max is freezing after iOS 18 update

Post a recent software update on my iPhone 13 pro max, the screen is frozen as a white screen. The repair store and customer supprt says it could be due to the software update which damaged the hardware since there is no physical damage and a common issue they are seeing with the pro max. The sad part is that they expect me to pay for repairs for no fault of mine (410 usd/33k inr) since the phone just crossed the warranty period.

When an iPhone freezes or becomes stuck on a white screen, it can occur due to the need for a restart, low battery, limited storage, app issues, or outdated software.

1. The simplest solution to address an iPhone freeze or white screen issue is to perform a force restart on the device. Force restart iPhone - Apple Support

2. If this initial method does not solve the issue, you can try alternative methods such as cleaning up the iPhone, restoring it with iTunes, and other methods. Fix iPhone won't turn on or is frozen- Apple Support

My iPhone 13 Pro Max that was perfectly fine before iOS18 is now frozen and won't turn on - even after trying all the troubleshooting steps from website / apple-chat. Finally took it to Apple certified store for diagnosis, it was declared that it won't turn on ever again after they ran some tests. They said the only option for me get the data (which I haven't backed up yet) is to get it to a data recovery center where they could possibly take the phone apart and try to recover whatever data they can.. the cost of data recovery could be twice as that of buying a new iPhone 16!! I lost trust my trust on Apple after all these.

I've an Iphone 13 Pro Max, which I purchased less than 2 years ago. Working perfectly fine and in great condition until completing the IOS18 update this week. Now the phone shuts off and restarts every couple minutes. Lengthy chats with apple support and a visit to their repair centre determined its a hardware issue, 'likely' triggered by the IOS 18 update. I have that in air quotes, as the repair centre has placed blame on the update, whereas Apple support centre simply calls it a coincidence that the hardware issue happened immediately after the update!

As its now nearly 2 years old and out of warranty, they won't cover any repairs or replacement and repair centre advised best option is to buy a new phone....absolutely outrageous.

Has anybody else had any luck getting their phone back working after the IOS18 meltdown, and complete lack of assistance or responsibility from Apple?

Unfortunately, you're learning a hard lesson about backups. They aren't something you wait to do until something happens. They are something you do every day so that when (not if) something happens, you'll have your data. It's not Apple's fault you didn't do that. They offer very easy ways to backup your iPhone.

Turn on iCloud backup, plug your phone in at night, connected to WiFi and your phone will back itself up every night.

Oh, then have you tried pressing the power button + up/down buttons at same time? It’ll automatically try resettling your phone back to the original state, although I cannot assure that if there’s water or some strange residue which led to the white screen, that’s an external agent, so the screen needs to be replace. Even though these cases are not in your case, then I consider buying another phone, coz 410USD for repair!?

I completely accept my fault on not backing up the data, but a software upgrade that freezes a device in good condition - this is what shakes my trust.

My iPhone 13, 2Yrs old, got bricked after iOS 18 update, Service Centre advised to buy a new phone, instead of repair. Called Apple Centre, but they refuse to agree that this could be due to OS update, and said that they have not received any such complaints, hence can not resolve this. Looking at the forums, seems there are cases like mine, not sure why Apple is not recognizing this.

My iPhone is freezing up since update too. This is first time I’ve ever had this problem in 15 years. I’ve tried restarting and resetting settings. Regretting updating:(. Sad but glad to see I’m not the only one. The first few days I also had issues hearing people and other iPhone users I speak with were also having issues hearing where it was cutting out. What is happening Apple?
