No sound on iPhone after iOS 18 Update

I have a case open with Apple Support right now for no notification sounds. She told me what you said, that with the new IOS update, when you have a third party email like gmail, you will not get sound notifications for your email unless your phone is plugged in. I am having all kinds of issues regarding no sound. Some of my haptics aren't working either. The only thing that seems to work is my phone will ring when someone calls me. No sound for texts, no sound when I turn click off the lock screen...what a mess.

Taittinger1980: I hear ya. It’s pretty ridiculous. I just switched to using the Outlook app and I disabled Apple Mail app. The outlook app is giving me sound notifications when I receive new mail. I don’t like the outlook app as much, but I’ll use it until Apple fixes the no sound for emails issue. Apple rep told me it was because of the security of IOS 18, it changed that feature of getting sound notifications when using third party email in Apple Mail, and that only charging it will get you the sound.

Audio on my iPhone 14 stopped working after ios 18 upgrade, I think it was the iOS 18.1.1 that caused it, so now my workphone can recieve calls but I can't hear the one I talked with but they can hear me. I assured that it only is software related issue with the dialer app by testing audio calls with Signal, that works, so it must be something buggy about the dialer app in ios 18.1.1, I eaven downgraded to iOS 18.1 but the same issue presists no sound in phone calls... All other sounds from other apps works thats not a problem, but the phone app is dead.

I updated to 18 yesterday on my 15 pro max. I'm now getting a cackling sound when listening to music. Not continuous. It will do it, then the volume reduces. Also I have extremely reduced volume on incoming calls.

I have the same issue: there is no sound for email alerts after the iOS 18 update.

I started hearing the sounds today, but ONLY when I had it plugged in to charge. Once I removed the charger I stopped hearing the alert sounds for my emails. Weird

I use the iPhone email program, iPhone 13 Pro Max, iOS 18

“Apple technical support assigned me a case number and told me that the only solution to fix not getting a mail sound notification is to completely erase my phone and set it back up from scratch (not from a backup)… to fix a mail sound from one of their apps? There must be an easier solution but additional calls to Apple say that this is the only solution.”

I have spoken with several people and have read in other Apple forums that have to do with this problem and the above mentioned solution/fix HAS NOT resolved the problem. (Erasing your phone and setting up from scratch).

Hard pass, based on what I have heard and read in other related Apple’s forums.

There MUST be a simpler solution.

If you also have a case open with Apple regarding no mail notification sounds using the Mail app with a Gmail account and they told you that if you are using a third party email account, that people will not get a notification sound with the 18 update, then why in gods good name are they telling me and others that the only solution is to erase our phones and setup from scratch?! And that “solution” has confirmed by others NOT to work. And if I call Apple for more help they refuse to provide any alternative solutions. I had no problems with notifications with iOS 17 but I have had nothing but headaches with iOS 18. It’s high time to switch to a third party email app that provides sounds since the “all new and shiny iOS 18” took away the basic functionality of basic iOS apps like Mail. Unbelievable. My frustration is, of course, not directed at you; it’s directed at Apple.

Dont worry. Apple will issue a fix but do yourself a favour…download Outlook App. Get all your email accounts set up on that. You will get sound notifications. Maybe disable your other mail app(s) in settings so you dont get multiple notifications. 

A couple of weeks ago I started getting sound notifications...SOMETIMES, it comes and goes. I lost sounds for email after the iOS 18.0 update, like so many others. I called customer service but they wanted me to do a complete reset of my phone and I didn't want to do that. I'm too afraid if I update to iOS 18.1 it will cause even the few times I DO get sound notifications to go back to ZERO. I'm also going to wait a couple of weeks.

I updated to iOS 18.4 on 3/31/2025, and this update resolved my issue of no notification sound while using the native mail app with my Gmail account. I have a iPhone 15 ProMax. It finally works again like it did in iOS17!

Mine had been working for the last month, intermittently at least. Yesterday I updated to 18.4 and I get all my notification banners and badges but yahoo email and my ISP email are back to no sounds. I have checked everything I can think of but my iPhone is broken.

I deleted the app, rebooted and reinstalled from the App Store. Prior to that I was getting notification banners on the Lock Screen but no sounds. Afterwards everything worked - for just 2 days, and then I stopped getting notification banners on the Lock Screen but I still get sounds. I give up - I’m not going to delete email accounts & app and reinstall every few days.

Since the update I get no sound when opening games on my phone. Have to restart my phone. Never happened before this update.

Hei! i have an iphone 14, when i receive a call it’s singing for a few seconds and after the sound dissapear even the call it’s still on hold. It really bothers me because sometimes i don’t hear it

This happened to me, too. My speakers are totally dead--Siri can’t hear me, there’s no sound during phone calls, etc. I’ll try restarting a few times, and I’m looking for this hearing aid setting someone else suggested. Will update.
