Whether you can trade in your old phone at the store depends on whether you actually purchased the phone from Apple or you purchased it using AT&T’s payment plan, in which case Apple is just the agent.
If you will be paying for it on your AT&T bill, I don’t believe you can trade in the phone at an Apple Store. You will need to sent your old phone to AT&T using a trade in kit they will send you.
Yes, you can complete the trade at your Apple Store as opposed to mailing the phone in. They will still send you a trade in kit, but the trade can still be done at your Apple Store.
