No sound from videos in photos after iOS18 update

I’ve updated my iPhone to iOS18 and in photos when you play a video, it plays but there is no sound and this is on all my videos not just the ones I’ve recorded since updating to iOS18, anyone else got this problem? Anyone know how to fix this? I’ve notice this happens in silent mode when it didn’t before, I always have my phone on silent and I don’t want to have to un-silent my phone everytime I watch a video!

The update to iOS 18.1 has put the audio back for all stored videos, both downloaded and recorded. Nothing else has been changed in any of my settings. I just updated to 18.1 and the sound is back.

no resetting the iPhone, changing audio formats, or saving and resending videos needed. Just the update.

Again, my iPhone is the 13 Pro. They may be other audio issues that are specific to your iPhone. Mine doesn’t have special audio recording. So that was never the issue with mine.

I no longer have to switch off silent mode or move the volume up/down to get the audio to play.

Additionally, the audio fixing itself didn’t happen from the previous 18.0.1 update, just the 18.1.

I’ve called Apple about this too. Spoke with the a specialist in hardware and was told essentially that this most likely won’t be a priority for Apple to do anything about.

I have an iPhone 13, so no special audio to mess with. This is happening with ALL videos. Not just the ones I’ve recorded. Ones I’ve saved from messages, and Tik Toks that I’ve downloaded. Also, the mention of a speaker icon or button is non existent in my video playbacks. Again for both downloaded and recorded video.

The solution that has been working for me is to move the volume. I keep the volume turned up all the way, so when I was pressing volume up, it did nothing. If I press volume down at least once to move the volume slider, the audio starts playing. If you keep your volume level anywhere other than max level, pressing either volume up or down once will “unlock” the audio.

Once you have the audio playing on one video, it will work for all videos as long as you stay in the photos app. When you go to another app, the audio in the photos app will go back to being mute until you unlock it again.

Figured it out…

In photo settings toggle the Auto-Play Motion on. The volume button will show in the lower right hand corner of the video, which will obviously start playing. You’ll have the option there to toggle the volume on or off while you’re still in Silent Mode.

Conversely, while you’re still in Silent Mode, with the Auto-Play Motion off, the volume button won’t be there, but you’ll need to tap the play button in the lower left hand of the video. If your video starts playing with no sound, just tap the volume button on the side of your phone and sound plays. I tried this quite a few times, and sometimes the sound would play without me having to tap the button and other times the sound would play without me having to tap the button. I haven’t been able to figure that one out, but nonetheless this worked for me.

I took two screenshots and two screen recordings to show you all, but didn’t realize I can’t post videos here. This is my first time posting a solution to a troubleshooting question so if you guys could, please let me know if this helped you that would be great!

Hello there. First, I just found the problem. The issue is related to the spatial recording.

Go to settings, camera, record sound and choose stereo.

From now on, new videos recorded on iOS18 will have no problem with the playing sound. But that’s for future videos.

The ones you already recorded, the quick fix is to send them to any messaging app or by email, and saving them back from there to your camera roll.

I hope this can help you and that Apple releases a patch asap.

Blessings.

Very annoying and troublesome. I’ve just taken a ton of video on a holiday and like many others cannot hear any audio on playback. I noticed however, that It does have audio when they’re played in edit mode, which could possibly mean that there is audio in the video file, but that a glitch in the IOS18 upgrade prevents them from accessing the audio in normal playback mode.

All!! We know just turning silent mode off would make sense. The issue is that you did not have to turn off silent mode before the iOS 18 update. The same issue happened a few updates back, but I can’t remember which one. Apple eventually fixed it within that same update, but a few patches later. I was hoping they fixed it with 18.2, but nope! It is incredibly annoying to have to turn silent mode off every time if you want to hear audio from a video.

Please fix it with peace and love!!

Some more info:

  • Photos videos still have sound. It just plays on the iPhone speaker. When it starts without sound, adjust the volume up or down or switch the mute button to off, then the iPhone speaker plays the sound.
  • Photos videos can also play sound to Bluetooth earphones or AirPods.
  • Photos videos can NOT play sound via AirPlay to Airplay devices anymore. Not to my AirPort Express with a hifi stereo connected. Not to an AppleTV connected to a Home Cinema System or to Bluetooth headphones (connected to the AppleTV). The sound alays plays on the iPhone speaker, does not get redirecred to the AirPlay device. That is the problem. While Apple Music recognises the AirPlay device and DOES play sound through them, when you open Photos, it does not.
  • The sound does play through the AppleTV when screen mirroring from my iPhone.

This is clearly a bug! Fix it!
