Why is my iPad Pro not capitalizing letters correctly after the iPadOS 18 update?

Since updating my iPad Pro 12.9” 3rd Generation to iPadOS 18, the typing with the on-screen virtual keyboard is doing weird things. For example, when I want to type “I” (upper case “i”), I do not type Shift-i as this isn’t necessary. My Auto-capitalization is on, yet it comes out as lower case “i”. Now I have to do Shift-i every time i want the capital letter. It was fine before iPadOS 18. Also, it used to be that if I wanted to type “didn’t” or another word with an apostrophe, I could type “didnt” and the iPad would add the apostrophe to correct it to “didn’t”. Not now, since upgrading to iPadOS 18.

I’ve had various other problems with the virtual keyboard that I’ve posted about here. This is the icing on the cake. I was hoping that iPadOS 18 would have fixed the other issues, but instead, it created these latest issues.

i didnt wouldnt doesnt

That previous gibberish sentence was an example of what it’s doing now. (It did just add the apostrophe in “it’s” in the previous sentence by itself. But many times, it hasn’t.)

SteelCityAnne, I just left feedback with Apple (again). I tried a little experiment: I removed the iPad from the Magic Keyboard case. Some of the issues disappeared. Namely, the virtual keyboard isn’t disappearing after every typed letter. The “i” is capitalizing. The apostrophes are appearing, except for the word “wouldnt”, as you can see. Weird. I can’t believe the interaction with the Magic Keyboard is causing this. It’s an Apple product being used with an Apple product. Reminiscent of Microsoft products being incompatible with each other. I don’t expect that with Apple.

ThunderRoadJoe, my Auto-capitalization has been turned on since I got the iPad. I’ve since bought an excellent keyboard case from Amazon, made by ESR. It’s a lot like the Apple Magic Keyboard case for the iPad Pro 12.9”, with the cantilever structure, magnetic attachment, etc. The nice thing is it has an on/off switch for the keyboard, so when I type with the virtual on-screen keyboard like I’m doing now, and the ESR keyboard is switched off, some of the problems disappear, like the uppercase “i” auto-capitalization works. But if I turn the keyboard on, it’s like the iPad is in the Apple case, and we’re back to the same problems with “i” not correcting, apostrophes missing, etc. Because the Apple case and ESR case are behaving the same when the ESR keyboard is turned on, this proves to me that the iPad is not reacting well to either case. When the ESR keyboard is turned off, and the iPad behavior changes like it’s not in the Apple case, this shows it’s the iPad, not either of the cases. So the big question is, what in God’s name is up with the iPad? There are still issues in the ESR case, even with its keyboard turned off. I’m not the only one who reported issues to Apple. Are they working on it? It is so annoying and time wasting. I never would have expected that an Apple product would be this challenging to use in everyday usage. If Apple doesn’t fix this, this is my last iPad. P.S. Now I’m having tech problems posting this, with a message saying “Your post could not be saved. Please try again in a few moments.” Another message says I have to log in again, even though I’m still logged in. I get this a lot in the Apple Community. All around, loads of fun between the iPad and posting about it.

Hi there ,

It wasn't fine before iPad OS18 . I have had issues with predictive text putting in the wrong words and when I go to a specific place in the sentence to delete , it highlights instead . While typing this post , so far I have had to correct the predictive

3-4 times within three sentences .

I am going to submit the problem to Apple feedback , other than that I don't know what to do . I don't fully rely on it and I proofread everything .

Hi SteelCityAnne. Hello from Pittsburgh. I agree with you. As I stated in my original post, I’ve had various issues before the update. I’ve posted about these elsewhere in this forum. When I said it was fine before the update, I was referring specifically to the issues with lower case “i” and lack of the apostrophe. As I type this, I’m having an issue where the virtual keyboard closes after every letter I type. I removed my iPad from my Apple keyboard case to finish this. I shouldn’t have to do that. I’ve also had issues where the first letter of the first word of every paragraph wouldn’t capitalize. I submitted the issues to Apple feedback. I haven’t heard anything. By the way, like you, I also have the issue where a word highlights instead of letting me place the cursor. All of these problems make for an extremely annoying experience that makes typing a sentence take twice as long as it should - or longer.

Quite honestly, I’m extremely frustrated with the iPad from this behavior and multiple typing issues. I remember Apple’s tagline was “It just works”. Well, not now. When this iPad dies, I think I’m going to seriously consider another brand of tablet. These problems shouldn’t exist in ANY tablet, and certainly not an Apple product. What good is a tablet if you can’t efficiently type on it?
