iPhone 16 Pro Freezes and Restarts

My iPhone 16 Pro 256gb was fine yesterday. This morning, it has been crashing constantly. The settings app and the calendar app are the worst culprits. Calendar just freezes, you cannot drill down to the day. The settings app just turns black and then crashes. Multiple times the whole phone restarts. I tried a hard restart to see if it was a cache issue. Didn't help. I turned off the wifi and that seemed to slightly help when using other apps. One time the settings app worked and I went to see the analytics logs. Lots of crashes in there and 1 kernel panic. Also, Siri is not responding; just hangs there with no response.

I spent 3 days transferring all the apps from my iPhone 13 Pro and do NOT want to reset it again. Getting an authenticator app configured with all my accounts takes hours. This is very disappointing.

Anyone have any thoughts or proven solutions? Thank you in advance.

Everything is working perfectly after I reset my replacement phone to factory settings and set it up as a new phone rather than restoring from iCloud backup. Since everything is synced to iCloud anyways and most things work cloud-based, I really haven't had any issues or felt like I missed anything. On the contrary, my phone has been working perfectly without any issues whatsoever. Must be some sort of issue with iCloud Backups. Very happy to have found a solution to this incredibly annoying issue.

I have not had any further issues since updating to 18.0.1. I discovered that the Wireguard VPN app crashed my phone and also caused massive issues with the Network Settings and Cellular signal bars. It also causes settings to crash and restart. There are likely some apps that are misbehaving as well as things that are now addressed with the newest OS 18.0.1 patch. Wireguard still misbehaves and cannnot be installed on 18.0.1. Open VPN has no issues. If you get the reset circle when you run an app and things are weird, you found the misbehaving app. Uninstall the bad app, do a reset and see if things are stable.

After two iPhones (the original bought and the replacement both setup with Move to iOS and then iCloud backup) had kernel panics, I contacted Apple support to ask how to setup the new third iPhone I got and they told me to set it up as completely new, to not even put my Apple account during setup but only afterwards in the settings.

Now my new iPhone is perfectly fine with no kernel panics and no camera freezing. I notice some touches are not registered but I hope they will continue to patch this issue.

PS - Apple support told me that if you restore from iCloud, factory reset won’t fix any issues stemming from the backup.

I had similar issues. I tried to transfer all my data from my Iphone 12, but for some reason the iphone 16 and the 12 could not talk to each other. So I went for the icloud restore, and it led to serious problems (phone kept freezing and restarting every few minutes, icons getting blank, settings and app store being all black screens or app icons being blank, etc.).

Then I decided to backup my old phone (12 pro max) on my laptop, erased my new phone (16 pro max), then restored the newly created iphone 12 backup from the laptop to the iphone 16 and the phone is now working very well.

I had the same issue. After receiving the new iPhone 16 Pro Max and restoring the backup, things kept going wrong. I then got a different device, but the same issues occurred. In the end, I decided to start fresh without the backup. Since then, I haven’t had any problems. It’s a bit of work, but fortunately, most things (calendar, photos, files, etc.) are restored from iCloud anyway. It seems there’s something in the backup that the 16 can’t handle.

Update: Went to Apple for a support ticket meeting and they fixed the issue. 🙏🏻

They said it‘s a kind of panic mode, that the iPhone gets into which is normal for every phone out there and developers are trying get ahead of this by providing updates.

But sometimes, something (iCloud backups, user behavior, …) can let the phone get into this state and with the iPhone 16 devices, they apparently didn’t get every software detail right. But now they got it! 😊

After doing 2 diagnostics and a complete restart of the phone with an 8 hour iCloud backup reload, the phone works fine! 😍💪🏻

No more random restarts, no freeze, nothing! Back to the good old perfectly working iPhone days! 🙏🏻

Thanks Apple Team 🍏🍎

have the same issue with the 16pro, been having these issues since the

11. opened ticket, have spent over a month from launch day dealing with Apple Support,

trying their various fixes, sending them analytics, been to Apple store

to have back panel and logic board replaced. Deleted apps that haven't

been updated in over two years, games that aren't optimized for iphone

or over 6 years old. Was able to get springboard crashes down from

12-20 a day to 3-7 day. Changed notifications to

scheduled summary. have 120 notifications, put 90 in summary every 4

hours, previously had 56 notifications in summary every 2 hours. cuts restarts down to 1 or 2 a day now, only resprings when i am getting alot of notifcations at once ie when i have NCAA, NHL, NBA game notifications and dynamic island refreshes

Had this same issue, my phone was constantly restarting and yesterday, it turned off for 5 hours with no sign that it would come back on. In a panic that my brand new iPhone 16 Pro Max had just died on me, I drove to the Apple Store. They did a diagnostic and it looks like my Logic Board was manufactured incorrectly and it came fried. They are replacing it under the one year warranty but the email I received said that without the warranty, it would be $749.00. They are going to call me back in the next few days when they receive the item. Very disappointing but relieving there’s actually something wrong and I wasn’t going crazy. If you’re still within your one year, you should go to the Apple Store ASAP and let them fix it for you.

So I did a reset and deleted everything. Started up the iPhone again without loading up any of my info from my iPad or other devices. I logged onto my Apple ID and started downloading apps one at a time. I got a replacement eSIM and so far it’s been quite stable (knock on wood). I now have to rebuild my App Library from scratch… upside of this I realised how many apps I had that I never used. Been two days and so far so good. It must have been a corrupt app.

I as well had issues with the iPhone 16 Pro Max. I couldn't use the camera as my phone would freeze and restart. Apple Support run diagnostics and it failed system stability. I got it replaced and the new one had the exact same issues. Both had panic logs. For the second one I also tried factory resetting it and setting up as new but that didn't fix it (Apple Support ran analytics again, same failure). I ended up returning it and getting a refund. Now it's sold out everywhere.

After uploading the log to ChatGPT:

Panic Reason: The panic occurred due to an error in the DART (Device Address Resolution Table) for the AVE (Apple Video Encoder).

  • The specific error is related to a PTE (Page Table Entry) invalid exception on a read operation at the address DVA 0x1000b44c2c0. This indicates some memory mapping or access issue in the device address space.

Panic String:

panic(cpu 3 caller 0xfffffff0473b6a54): "dart-ave (0xffffffdd4e318000): DART(CPUDART) error: SID 0 PTE invalid exception on read of DVA 0x1000b44c2c0 (CTE 0x10 SEG 0x5 PTE 0x513) ERROR_SID_SUMMARY 0x00003000 TIME 0x32489e90583 TTE 0 AXI_ID 0" @AppleT8110DART.cpp:2257

Relevant File: AppleT8110DART.cpp, which is likely involved in the memory handling for the device's hardware decoder or encoder.

Phone is stable at the moment. I made no changes to the phone itself and it hasn't crashed in the last 3 hours.

I did notice something strange about my iCloud backup. Look at this text is under the name of my phone. I have never seen that before. I have English set at my language as well.

This text made me look a little closer at the logs for the 4 kernel panics today. I noticed that the first one happened around 300AM while performing a backup to iCloud. Maybe the failing backup corrupted a bunch of other things? I have no idea.

So, I figured I would just reset the phone and start from scratch. Before I reset it, I performed a backup directly to my Mac instead of iCloud. It took over an hour to backup but after that the phone stabilized and hasn't crashed since. I don't see a correlation, but as of right now, I'm not complaining - it's working as expected.

Here's to praying it stays stable!

I experienced some bugs yesterday and the day before.

It started with my phone shutting down while I was trying to record a video. I thought it had run out of battery since the charge was low.

After plugging it in to recharge, the phone turned on, but when I entered my passcode, it would freeze on the last character and then restart.

Unable to turn the phone off normally, I had to perform hard resets, but the same thing kept happening over and over again.

So, I decided to let the phone charge overnight. At some point, I did another hard reset, and it offered me the option to recover my data. Eventually, I was able to access the phone.

Then I decided to proceed with the 18.1.1 update, hoping it would resolve any underlying issues. However, it got stuck during the update verification process. Once again, I couldn’t do anything except perform more hard resets. I tried several times, but nothing worked.

Having given up, I decided to write to a friend using the Messages app, but even then, it bugged. I couldn’t access the app; it kept crashing. After retrying, it eventually worked. I also encountered a few bugs while trying to unlock my phone.

Finally, I decided to update via iTunes, and that went smoothly. Since then, I haven’t noticed any bugs. I’m monitoring it and hoping the issue is resolved for good this time.

After figuring out what causes of my iphone 16 pro randomly freezes and restarts itself, I decided to chose the "Optimize iphone Storage" rather than "Download and Keep originals" in Photos settings . Apple support confirmed also that this one will be the possible reasons of randomly freezing when you choose "Download and Keep Originals" instead of "Optimize iphone storage" . Its feel stable for me now on. I hope this will be helpful for you guys. This was based on my experience. I hope it will works for you too.
