I upgraded my iPhone 12 Pro to a 16 Pro, and the new phone will not connect to my 2018 Mazda CX-5 with CarPlay. When I plug it in, it charges but makes no sign of connecting.

I had the same issue with my 2019 Toyota Avalon. I tried some cable adapters (both lighting and USB A) to convert one of the ends of the old cables I had. That failed miserably and didn’t work.
I bought an Anker USB-A A to USB-C cable for about $10 from Walmart. It comes with a cable wrap which is nice in the center console to keep things organized.
The new cable worked right away. CarPlay booted faster than ever before. No issues at all.
I tried this and it literally did nothing to help me.

Having problem with my IPhone 16 also on my wired carplay connection very have to forget and reconnect several times. Every other day the connection has to be reset.
Mine is switched to on, but still not connecting when I plug into my car. 2020 Hyundai Santa Fe.
My iphone 16 pro connects but his does not. Same iphones. 2024 Hyundai Tucson
that has bluetooth.
