CarPlay not working with iPhone 16 Pro

I upgraded my iPhone 12 Pro to a 16 Pro, and the new phone will not connect to my 2018 Mazda CX-5 with CarPlay. When I plug it in, it charges but makes no sign of connecting.

I am so disappointed! My new iPhone 16 Pro does not work connect to my Carplay in my Toyota CHR. Had I known this, I would have upgraded to an iPhone 15 Pro instead. :(

My new iPhone 16 worked perfectly on a newer rental car. Will not work on our 2020 Tundra or 2020 Telluride. Would not be recognized by my iMac. Spent hours trying to figure this out. Used cable that came with the new phone. Used multiple different cables. Spent hours on the phone with Apple and actually scheduled an appointment with Toyota. I had a little epiphany(wife suggested), I tried this little adapter and it’s worked perfectly with my computer and on the car.

I used a USB-C to USB-C cable with a small adapter from USB-C to USB. Seemed like a cheap hack.

There is no way you could have known in advance… If the CarPlay implementation in the Toyota CHR is sufficiently old, and though it may have worked with your iPhone 12, there is no assurance that it would have worked with an iPhone 15 Pro either.

Verify with the Toyota service department that no outstanding CarPlay update is available for your vehicle, and then review the owner's manual to confirm you are doing everything correctly to pair the iPhone 16 with your vehicle. What I mentioned above about the lack of multi-link BlueTooth may also be an issue where you cannot have the phone paired to two separate Bluetooth connections in the vehicle.

I have a Volkswagen Tiguan (2019) and Jetta (2018) and could not get my iPhone 16 Max Pro to connect. Based on all the suggestions I found online this is what I did to fix it:

I ordered a usb-a to usb-c data transfer cord. Apparently some charging cords only charge and do not transfer data. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I went into settings on my iPhone and then Content & Privacy restrictions and turned off CarPlay and turned off my iPhone and switched it back on.

I went into my car and deleted all existing phone connection. Then on my iPhone went into my bluetooth settings, located my car connection and hit “forgot this device”.

I then went into settings on my iPhone and then Content & Privacy restrictions and turned on CarPlay and turned off my iPhone and switched it back on.

I then added my iPhone to my car via Bluetooth first and then plugged my phone in with the cord I purchased and it worked.

I had the same problem with my Honda Accord. All I needed was an Apple USB-C to Lightning adapter for my old cord. This was after I bought a new (non Apple) USB C to USB A cord that didn’t work. The Apple Store salesperson explained that some cords will only charge but not carry data. My Honda’s Car Play prompted me if I wanted to use the new phone with Car Play. Works fine now.

I agree with the comments here. The joy of getting the new iPhone 16 Pro Max was quickly diminished when I plugged in carplay and all I get is static, garbled voices and every other word is dropped. I have tried three different and purchased a new Apple cord and the Apple USB-C to Lightning adapter...which also didn't improve anything. I have spent hours on the phone with AT&T, my provider, I spent two hours in the "Genius" Bar last night and still haven't been helped. Everyone passes the buck and I'm left with a non-operable carplay. I had not one bit of trouble with my 13 Pro...everything is connected to this phone upgrade. I just want a solution.

Hi Dan

Quick question - when you reset the infotainment system to the default settings and you connected your iPhone 16 Pro (with the adapter and cable) and it worked, had you previously paired your iPhone via Bluetooth (for telephone & media in the car) or, did you pair via Bluetooth afterwards? I guess I’m asking the process I should follow: first CarPlay (via cable) and then Bluetooth or vice versa? Maybe it doesn’t make any difference? Thanks again for your advice.
