Error 06B4.0000 restoring iPad mini 6th gen after failed iOS 18 upgrade

Using a the Apple Devices app on an up-to-date Windows 11 PC, I was prompted to update my iPad mini 6th gen to iOS 18. Sadly, I opted to do so. Upgrade failed. I was able to get the iPad to reboot into recovery mode but when I tried to restore my prior backup (made just before I attempted the upgrade), I get this error "The Ipad could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (10). 06B4.000". It looks like I am not alone with this problem but no answers posted yet. Help!

iPad, iPadOS 17

Make sure you a USB-A to lightning cable instead of a USB-C to lightning cable.

I came across this when i had the same problem recovering from a update: iOS 17.7 to iOS 18.0

  • Connected to a windows 11 computer
  • Using "Apple Devices version 1.4.7.68" installed from Microsoft Store
  • iPhone 13 mini (256)

Using USB-C -> Update hangs at 50% -> Apple Devices throws "06B4.0000" error

Using USB-A -> Update works

sacha1969, you should be able to do a hard reset (up vol, down vol, then hold power button).

the cable may not be the issue.

on your PC that the phone is plugged into, try a different wifi source.

from what i've personally experienced, and seen others try, there may be a security feature on the wifi.

if you have a hotspot, or another phone with personal hotspot may work.

So do I need a USB-A cable to restore my iPhone no matter what, or can I use my USBC cable?

If you already have a USB-C to Lightning cable, you don't necessarily require a USB Type-A cable to restore an iPhone or iPad.

However, if your computer doesn't have a USB-C connection - or if you encounter difficulties with the restore process when using a USB-C cable - a Type-A to Lightning cable can sometimes resolve a connection problem.

What if I don’t have any USB-A cable and I want to update or restore my iPhone 13?

USB Type-A to Lightning cables are available for purchase from many reputable manufacturers. Here is one from Mophie, directly marketed by Apple:
