Camera app crashing on my iPhone 16 Pro Max

Having issue on my iPhone 16 pro max 512 gb when launching camera control from Lock Screen it’s crashing the camera app. Screen turns black and crashing. Also phone seems to be getting abnormally hot when playing games or recoding video for a short period of time. Anyone else experiencing these issues and wondering if it’s a software or hardware issue.

IOS 18.0.1 did NOT solve the camera crashing issue for me.

Same here but it crashes when I take a picture however I start the camera app. As has been reported a restart temporarily fixes the problem. I called Apple support but my call was "accidentally" dropped by a confused representative. I guess we'll just have to wait for Apple to fix the issue. Hopefully it's a software problem and not the hardware.

Same here. I reported this on the Support app and the response was an underwhelming… did you try restarting your iPhone. 🙄

Then they asked me to run the diagnostic and afterward advised no problem with my phone.

so I guess they are in denial rather than saying wait for the update.

I would prefer they just said, this is a known issue and will be resolved.

18.0.1 here and it crashes still. Been on the text support with Apple; they ran remote diagnostics; declared it OK and sent me to the Apple store for hardware diagnostics. Went down there yesterday and they also declared it OK. Said the only thing I can do is to wipe the phone completely and start again, that it might be something in my backup that is causing it. I am going to soldier on for a bit in the hope they will release another update. It’s super annoying though. I take a lot of photos.

My iPhone 16 pro max has the same issue with camera crashes every other day. I spent an hour with customer support over phone. Then took to the Apple Store, they did factory reset and installed 18.0.1 from their support system and then after restarting, WiFi switch stayed always disabled and no way to turn it on. So they decided to give me a replacement phone. After a couple days, the camera started crashing again. And again crashed today. And looks like Apple has no clue. I have a support call scheduled tonight again. Very disappointing. Didn’t expect this from Apple.

after speaking to apple support I performed the restore via PC as it apparenlty instealls fresh rather than updating. It took several hours and ~7 attempts before I actually got it to restore and not fail without various unkown or DFU errors.

I tried from a windows 11 device with Apple Devices and a Windows 10 device with iTunes and experienced failures both ways before eventually getting through on attempt 3 on the windows 10 device.

Required a force restart (volume up, volume down, hold side button) between each attempt.

Good news:

I had been running for 36 hours with it set up as a new device no issues with the Camera.

Bad news:

After 36 hours on the fresh setup I decided to restore my backup to have all my app data back and ~19.5 hours later we are back to the same crashing camera issue when a captures if taken.

I agree they are issues with certain batches. My husband has the 16 pro max which we got the same day (9/20) and he has had no issues. Meanwhile my troubles began day 1. Apple support is trying to tell me a replacement phone may have the same issue, but I’m willing to see if I will get lucky with one from a batch that doesn’t have these issues, especially since I starting having overheating of the battery whenever the camera issue occurs, which worried me as to how much it’s affecting my overall battery in the long term.

Following lobsterghost1's force reset suggestion, the camera was working fine this morning.

Update: Camera has stopped working again roughly 24h after the force reset. So force reset is not a solution for me at least. iPhone 16 Pro Max iOS 18.0.1. Going to try the Beta Update now.

There are a few reasons why, with two devices with identical hardware, one might exhibit a problem and the other doesn't. So it is not a 'bad batch' smoking gun. Even if it is a device problem (rather than iOS), most of the time these can be worked around in the software.

W3JNP indicates that there is a fix in test. So it might be possible to get that via the beta update (Settings > General > Software Update > Beta Updates). Or simply power-cycle every morning until around the 28th as W3JNP suggests. Anything else is just speculation.

Updated to change worked around in software rather than the more specific OS.

Or just return the existing (faulty) device and get a new one. I none the less appreciate your clear sighted summary of the issues, and 'pray' that Apple sorts this out. My experience is that the online / telephone support staff have still not noticed this problem is happening and have now wasted many hours going through it all with them.

(I have now bought a replacement 16pro from a re-seller) in case the issue cannot be solved and have asked to have my trade in 12 pro back as my backup device while I wait for a replacement device direct from Apple. It looks like the wait for my old device to return and then time to return the 16pro and replace cycle could last 2/3 weeks so I am not happy like everybody else here. In the meantime maybe they will fix it but it's not looking terribly promising is it?

I cannot manage without a mobile phone so in future I will wait a good few weeks before trading in my old device while testing a new model - as that would have saved a lot of angst. Lesson learnt.

I am on my second phone and it's no better. I reboot every day to use camera. Very sad because i found out it's faults 2 days before vacation. Saw the most beautiful sea turtle. Needed to reboot..... missed the picture.

Before the new.01 update i couldn't even reboot to get it to work. Hopefully it will get better soon. I love my Apple.
