Camera app crashing on my iPhone 16 Pro Max

Having issue on my iPhone 16 pro max 512 gb when launching camera control from Lock Screen it’s crashing the camera app. Screen turns black and crashing. Also phone seems to be getting abnormally hot when playing games or recoding video for a short period of time. Anyone else experiencing these issues and wondering if it’s a software or hardware issue.

IOS 18.0.1 did NOT solve the camera crashing issue for me.

I upgraded from an iPhone 12, and used the backup from that to set up my new iPhone 16 Pro. So far I've found the iPhone 16 Pro painfully slow, sticky, the battery drains within 5-6 hours with minimal use and it gets very hot. And, of course, the camera is CONSTANTLY crashing. Disastrous. My old iPhone 12 was twice as fast and reliable as this 16 Pro. Why is Apple dragging their heals to fix or even properly acknowledge these issues?

This is the first iPhone I ever used that’s got a bug in it. I think there’s something fundamentally wrong somewhere. Perhaps Apple is not paying much attention to its recruitment process anymore. I mean, it’s used to be crystal perfect With any Apple products you use it out of the box and you are rest assured it’s gonna do what you need it to do. This needs to be fixed as soon as possible else lots of people are gonna dump this products sooner rather than later.

It’s so disappointing to see Apple acting like this is an isolated issue when clearly, it’s not.

It actually is a relatively rare issue. I have taken several hundred photos with my 16 Pro Max since launch day, both launching Camera conventionally and via Camera Control, and have never seen this issue occur.

That having been said, I know that doesn't help when you experience it, which is why it's important to follow the advice of the Apple Store folks, no matter how silly it may seem to you. There's something reasonably unique about your configuration that is causing this to occur when it's not for the majority of owners. The only way to find out what is causing it on yours when it doesn't happen on others is to be grindingly thorough, and yes, restoring from a backup can be one of the causes.

I’m too having exactly same issue with my iPhone 16 Pro Max 256GB. The camera app crashes when opened either from Camera Control or from App. It crashes & shuts when try taking a picture. At the same time phone becomes unreasonably hot without usage & microphone too stops working for calls. Restarting resolves it temporarily but issue pops up again & again. I hope Apple Team is listening. Its very annoying these problems with just 3 weeks into purchase. :-(

1. Hello Dogcow-Moof, here's what we know:

It happens with 18 and 18.0.1, but not 18.1. That's my experience.

2. It happens if you have transferred from an old iPhone to a new iPhone 16 (the variant does not seem to matter although the majority seem to have Pros, Max or otherwise).

So when you say it happens to very few users, that might be true across the majority of iPhone 16 users.

Thanks for the information.

For what it's worth, I transferred everything from my iPhone 15 PM to my 16 PM and have turned my phone off once in the past two months.

I have never, ever seen this issue, so there's got to be some other factor causing this.

I've never had Sound Recognition turned on, so I can't speak to that.

Same problem here, 16 Pro Max 1TB.

It also randomly stops recording, sometimes without playing a sound.

It also will sometimes start recording and then immediately stop recording. No errors, no rhyme or reason, restart doesn't fix it. It will just randomly start working again.

This phone has been the biggest disappointment apple has sold me to date.
