Camera app crashing on my iPhone 16 Pro Max

Having issue on my iPhone 16 pro max 512 gb when launching camera control from Lock Screen it’s crashing the camera app. Screen turns black and crashing. Also phone seems to be getting abnormally hot when playing games or recoding video for a short period of time. Anyone else experiencing these issues and wondering if it’s a software or hardware issue.

IOS 18.0.1 did NOT solve the camera crashing issue for me.

I am experiencing the same issue with a host of other issues. My touchscreen freezes where I can't get anything to work. I have to restart my iPhone at least seven times a day because the voice to text stops working. And the battery life is worse than my iPhone 15 Pro Max that I had for a year. This is disappointing. I've had every model of iPhone since the first one came out.

You are still within the exchange/return window. If you are truly having as many issues as you suggest and have tried working with Apple directly to diagnose and determine the best solution (replacement for example) then it would be in your best interest to utilize the return option. If you have not contacted Apple directly for help or visited your nearest Apple Store or authorized repair facility then you need to do so before the window closes if you fear the issue isn’t something that will be addressed via a future iOS update (or you don’t feel comfortable waiting an unknown amount of time for an update to possibly address it).

I’m getting really frustrated being unable to be sure I can take a photo outdoors. Camera keeps shutting down or turning black. Phone gets really hot. If I shut down and restart it seems to work for a couple of pictures. But the next time I want to take a photo - I’m back to the black screen or shut down! This is atrocious and unacceptable.

Still happening for me, this and many other things even after 18.0.1. Phone gets progressively less usable until a reset, then acts fine for half a day or so. I have been approved for replacement, but it’s been a week and no shipment of the replacement yet. It will likely be the last pre-order for me. This has been a real pain.

I have no further issues and would update here if anything pops up. You just reset, keep your e-sim(s), then after restart don’t pick another device to restore and just log into your iTunes account. This allows you to restore messages, photos etc. Then you have to manually redownload all your apps. That’s it! Took me <2 hours this morning - I’m on a 1Gbps connection here, so able to download everything pretty quick.

So someone mentioned earlier that turning off Sound Recognition solved the issue for them. I’ve tried this and so far after a couple of days, the camera app isn’t crashing and remarkably my battery life has improved dramatically too. Go figure. Doesn’t remove the fact that Apple need to sort this issue as a priority. Turning off one iPhone feature to ensure another one doesn’t crash isn’t exactly a great fix.

Same issue on my 16 Pro. Reset works temporarily then it crashes again in an inopportune time. I found a temporary BS fix until Apple figures out what is going on.

I bought the app ProCamera for better options with the camera. The camera crashed repeatedly tonight and I tried ProCamera out of frustration. It worked flawlessly.

Maybe that will point apple techs in the right direction to repair the faulty phone.

I also have occasional overheating issues on my phone.

Im pretty disappointed in IPhone quality if multiple phones have this camera AND overheat problem. A rare “oops” with a quick fix is more Apple’s style, than this current mess.

Since you replied to the first post, can we assume you didn't read any of the later posts, where many reported that updating to the newest iOS 18.1, which was released on Monday, solved their problems, most prominently, the camera issues? Update your iPhone to iOS 18.1

I think there’s an issue with setting up the new phone from an old profile. I used one of ChatGPT’s suggestions and it worked on my 16 Pro: Reset All Settings

• Go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings. This won't erase your data but will reset system settings.

I did one more backup before this:

iCloud Keychain

If you were using iCloud Keychain to store your passwords, they should automatically sync back to your device after the reset. Make sure iCloud Keychain is turned on:

  • Go to Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud > Keychain.

  • Make sure iCloud Keychain is toggled

ON.

This will restore your saved Wi-Fi passwords, website logins, and other credentials.

Good luck. This helped me avoid a replacement, but I had to restore a lot of settings to apps not backed up to iCloud even my Apple Wallet.
