Camera app crashing on my iPhone 16 Pro Max

Having issue on my iPhone 16 pro max 512 gb when launching camera control from Lock Screen it’s crashing the camera app. Screen turns black and crashing. Also phone seems to be getting abnormally hot when playing games or recoding video for a short period of time. Anyone else experiencing these issues and wondering if it’s a software or hardware issue.

Worked with Apple Support. We tried reapplying the latest upgrade via my Mac and the phone in restore mode. Problem persisted a couple days later. I was advised the next step was to completely wipe the phone and reinstall everything from scratch, not from backup, as the culprit is likely somewhere in my backup. I did that over the weekend, took about 8 hours. It's been two days without the issue returning. I will continue to monitor.

Hi.

I was desperate like you. I followed nevertheless an advice from an apple tech. And it seems to work.

I had to instal a profil for my work which I did the first day after transferring from my old IPhone.

This morning I uninstalled the profil and reinstalled it.

until now I had non more issues with the camera. Hope it’s going to keep that way…

Hello Dogcow-Moof, here's what we know:

  1. It happens with 18 and 18.0.1, but not 18.1. That's my experience.
  2. It happens if you have transferred from an old iPhone to a new iPhone 16 (the variant does not seem to matter although the majority seem to have Pros, Max or otherwise).
  3. It goes away if you power-cycle the device every 24h; the 24h seems to be relevant. I did a force-reset late afternoon one day and it stopped working late afternoon the following day.

So when you say it happens to very few users, that might be true across the majority of iPhone 16 users. But what happens if you filter out:

  1. People who habitually turn their mobile off once a day (e.g. overnight)?
  2. People who did not use the transfer from an old iPhone to the iPhone 16? (Which would probably pull in ex-Androiders)?

My suggestion would be to take an out of the box iPhone 16 Pro [Max]. Transfer from, say, an iPhone 11 Pro Max that has been used (i.e. not a virgin one, although you could try a virgin one to rule out the transfer process).

LMK if there is anything I can do to help with mine, assuming I can downgrade back to 18. But 18.1 fixes the issue. However, a recent recording had no sound, so I guess I have the mic issue. I'm deaf so I rely on others to point it out to me.

Apple iOS 18.2 public release is rolling out around the world in many (all?) countries today. I watched a video from someone in Australia an hour ago and he’d installed the update and reported that it resolved many of his issues. One video I watched was an Australian photographer and he stated it resolved his camera issues.

The article below explains how to update. The release time in your region may not have occurred yet. You will just need to check the update option in your iPhone.

Either make an appointment to have your phone examined:

Genius Bar Reservation and Apple Support Options - Apple

or contact Apple Support directly:

Contact - Official Apple Support

It sounds like a hardware issue with your phone, as most other 16 Pro Maxes of that configuration can activate the camera with zero issues running iOS 18.2, especially if this has been occurring across multiple iOS releases.

I had the same issue with my brand new iPhone 16 pro max. Connected with IT support two days in a row. First time they asked me to do a reset as above. Did it and worked again but the next day same problem. I have the new phone for a week and it happens every single day. They adviced me to bring the phone back to apple, which is will do tomorrow!
