Camera app crashing on my iPhone 16 Pro Max

Having issue on my iPhone 16 pro max 512 gb when launching camera control from Lock Screen it’s crashing the camera app. Screen turns black and crashing. Also phone seems to be getting abnormally hot when playing games or recoding video for a short period of time. Anyone else experiencing these issues and wondering if it’s a software or hardware issue.

IOS 18.0.1 did NOT solve the camera crashing issue for me.

Same here. Apple ran diagnostics on my iPhone 16 and found no hardware issues. They suggested that it might be a VPN conflict – I use Tailscale but it has never been connected when my camera app crashes. At Apple's suggestion I have deleted the app and the VPN profile just to see whether that fixes it. I suspect Apple are just clutching at straws. They did say however that the camera app issue is being worked on by "the team". Roll on 18.0.2.

Same issue, 16 pro max camera crashes when trying to launch. Restart fixes it for a short time then starts all over Also experiencing some fairly extreme lag across the entire device when the camera is also crashing. This was occurring before the 18.0.1 update and after.

Also, nearly 13 days after setting the device up, it still gets quite warm with only minor tasks.

I finally bit the bullet and suffered through entirely erasing everything on my iPhone (except the eSim) and treating the phone as a new user in the process of bringing iOS up. Then restoring the most valuable apps I used to use. I spent 4 hours on it. I did NOT restore anything from back-up (but a lot of content/passwords/etc came right back from iCloud.)

No signs of trouble yet and...phone is far more responsive.

So why the problem with the back-up/restore? Doesn't Apple check content as it's backed up to make sure it's not corrupted? And check it again during the restore? If they don't, they could be replicating a lot of nasty code too...

What's up with that?

There are a few reasons why, with two devices with identical hardware, one might exhibit a problem and the other doesn't. So it is not a 'bad batch' smoking gun. Even if it is a device problem (rather than iOS), most of the time these can be worked around in the operating system.

W3JNP indicates that there is a fix in test. So it might be possible to get that via the beta update (Settings > General > Software Update > Beta Updates). Or simply power-cycle every morning until around the 28th as W3JNP suggests. Anything else is just speculation.

The one and only reliable workaround for me is to restart the phone within a few minutes of needing the camera, which is absurd. This has clearly been widely reported; I keep expecting a firmware update or even just an acknowledgement and roadmap update from Apple. Silence. Purposefully or not, we are the new camera’s Beta testers and that’s not why we buy Apple.

I have been experiencing this problem many times a day, rebooting my 16 pro for it to work only for a

very short time. Camera crashes, heating, you name it. It took me a long time to

have everything working after the change from my old phone, even recovering a copy

so I was not willing to start from a fresh OS and download and configure

everything, specially when I read that this does not seem to work. But I read

that someone tried “resetting all settings” under settings- General - transfer

or reset iPhone - reset. I tried that yesterday and it seems to have worked! No

issues since! I can open my camera and take pictures now when before it would

crash immediately. True I had to install all my cards again in wallet,

configure my alarms, notifications, WiFi passwords etc but my watch was still

connected, my apps mostly configured… not too bad.

I have the 16 Pro not even a month old and I have been having issues since I unboxed it as well. Camera freezes and either blacks out or returns to main screen, at times the battery power will show 1% and then flash back to normal, the video stopped recording sound and then started freezing as well. Restarting the phone will temporarily fix the issues but this is extremely frustrating for such an expensive device and I’ve chatted multiple times with Apple support after paying dearly for their Apple care and all they say is restart it. They attempted to walk me through a complete delete and restore of the iOS but then lost connection and never returned my call.
